I drive the Monaro Hwy 5 or 6 days a week. It’s the major road to the snowfields from the north (ie. Sydney).
There was another major accident today, 10k’s north of Cooma. Judging by what was left of the vehicles and the amount of emergency personnel and vehicles there, multiple people died or will wish they had.
EVERY SNOW SEASON I either see ambo’s, police and SES clearing away major accidents, or I see the leftover marks on the road. EVERY SEASON there’s more deaths. Every season there’s more twisted and shattered vehicles in the M&T scrapyard in Cooma.
And every day when I drive the hwy during the snow season I see idiots, normally with skis on the roof who so obviously have a death wish. Unfortunately today that wish came true for someone. And the person who caused the accident probably took other innocent travellers with them.
If you’re driving to the snow please drive carefully. Even if you are not the one being an idiot that idiot might be overtaking over a yellow line around the next blind bend you take, or they may be falling asleep and drifting lanes as you look down to shuffle your ipod track.
Most of the snow traffic I see are drivers who obviously are not used to driving country highways. It’s very different to driving in Sydney. Hwy speeds, distances, overtaking spots, they are all different. That’s not even thinking about things like kangaroos jumping out at you.
In short, please be careful. And if you are going to be an idiot then I hope you only kill or main yourself and I hope that it is quick and painless.
