COREY IGNORES PAIN TO RAISE MONEY
Tuesday, 20 October 2009
Wests Tigers forward Corey Payne pushed aside the pain of aching muscles to help raise $160, 000 for seriously ill children last week.
Payne was one of 20 dedicated cyclists who rode from the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane to the Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick from October 11 to 16 as part of the annual ‘1200kmsforkids’ Charity Bike Ride.
“I am so proud of not only myself but the collective group who participated in the ride,’’ Payne said.
“It was an astonishing effort to ride from Brisbane to Sydney and more so, to raise an incredible $160,000.
“We were able to present both hospitals with cheques for $80,000 each.
“I can honestly say that riding a push bike all the way from Brisbane to Sydney is no easy feat and that it is a lot of hard work, especially when you’re climbing hills.
“However, the smiles on the faces of the children at both hospitals make the trip all the worthwhile and more importantly, reinforces how lucky we are to be healthy.
“Thank you to all who supported me and sponsored me in the ride. I can assure you that the hospitals were very grateful of the donations received.”
Payne is the Wests Tigers’ nominee for the prestigious Ken Stephens Award after an outstanding effort in raising funds for The Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH) at Randwick. He also won the Wests Tigers NRL Community Champion Award for 2009.
He remains off-contract for next season.
is he still a WT forward though?
No……but good on him anyway…a great thing he’s done…
Corey was actually 2nd and runner-up this year for his community work. But the club gave him the award anyway.
Say whatever you want about his playing ability, he does heaps of quality work off it. A club like the Roosters should have a serious look at him.
bless his soul - throw another 2 year contract at him.
doesn’t a NRL contract go through to the end of october?
If so yes he is still a tigers player until then…
I wish we could fit Corey into the team somewhere. The guy is an absolute champion with all the community work he does. I can’t imagine some of the new players, like Arana, ever emboding the spirit of the Tigers like Corey…
Would have preferred his signing over Fulton or Fitzy anyday.
Well, I’ll try and forget the last 2 years of Pain this guy has inflicted on the team I support. Thank God he hasn’t been re-signed!
Sometimes it’s just nice to give credit when it’s due Alwaysonyou.
Well done Corey - you’ve raised a huge amount for charity!!!
