In order for the Wests Tigers to move forward, we need a clean out of some of our players. We have some good players that simply need to go because, although they are talented players, I think they need a change of atmosphere to get back to their best. Some players become stale at one club when they’ve been there for too long. This is why some players on my list need to go and others because they simply aren’t up to playing the game at high standards that is required for premiership success.
Players that need to be let go at the end of their contract are:
Ayshford - At worst, we would get the same quality out of Simona for a lot less money with the potential of Simona getting much better with experience. I would like to see what stocks we have in the junior grades to fill this spot too. You don’t need centres that are the best players on the field, just guys that can defend, run hard and run into holes. Speed wouldnt hurt either.
Lawrence - Yes, both centres need to go. Lawrence on the money that he is, surely isn’t worth keeping after his major injury last year. That, coupled with his below par performances over the past 3 years, his loss of speed and inability to break the line anymore means he needs to go. With the money freed up on both centres, I would like to see the Tigers either buy a top line centre and promote a junior or promote two young centres and develop them. Yes, the inexperience will hurt in the short term but dont forget, long term it will benefit the players and we can invest the money we save in other areas of the team.
Possible centre buys could be: Ryan Morgan from Parra (I like this kid….He’s excellent…quick, solid defense and boy does he know how to hit a hole!!!) Ben Pomeroy - Another good player…Yes he has his critics but hes aggressive, can offload at will and runs hhaarrddd!, Junior Sa’u?, Jerome Ropati? <—probably not but ill throw it out there anyway, Mitch Aubusson? <—versatility value as well. Mahe Fonua? Thoughts?
Keith Galloway - Look, yes hes a good player. I agree and this was possibly the hardest choice to make but I think the negatives outweigh the positives here. He should be offloading way more than he does due to his height, I dont think he hits the line hard enough for a prop, he gets lifted and pushed back often again because of his height and his play the balls are waaayyy to slow which negatively impacts our backline plays or the next hit up as the defense has time to set itself. Again, Galloway is on a good chunk of money and with Woods, Buchanan, Seumanufagai and Groat/Gavet to come back we have some good juniors. If we can replace Galloway with a better quality prop to compliment the aforementioned youngsters, we would be much better off.
Possible prop buys could be: Aiden Tolman? <— nothing freakish about him but solid player nonetheless. Mitchell Dodds? …Not many props off contract this year but we’ll be ok when our young guys come back from injury. You know what, Id love to have Kasiano at the club…he signed a long term deal with the dogs no?
Benji - CYA LATER! He has to go. I dont care what insults some of you throw at me…After Robbie’s deal at nearly 900k Benji will want the same money and he aint worth it. Simple as that. Most overrated player in the comp and he hasnt performed consistently well in 3 seasons, maybe 4. Yes, he sets up a lot of tries but we also go without a lot of tries due to his errors and his inability to get repeat sets with kicks. The kicks either go dead, into touch or straight to a defender. We missed out on the grand final because he got caught on the 5th tackle against the warriors a few years ago, hasn’t attempted field goals in many close games that would have won it for us but rather ran it instead with a loss as the outcome and he is a hog! He wont let any halfback run plays…So no junior player will reach their potential playing with Benji. We shouldnt sign him when his contract is up in 2015 (I think) and go with a young halves pairing like what Manly did with Cherry Evans and Foran and what the Titans are doing with Kelly and Sezer. The benefits will come for the Titans in due course. We have Sironen and Miller! Brooks in the fold as well. That frees up about $500k!
Moltzen - I kind of feel sorry for him because Sheens ruined him in my opinion. We had won 13 straight games with Molzten and Benji at halfback and they seemed unstoppable. They lived together at the time, we’re top mates and had a great connection. You could see it on the field. Moltzen with his long, deep and crisp passes to a deep Benji started every attack that always looked dangerous. Moltzens back up ability was great too from halfback for some reason. Anyway, Sheens started with Lui and Moltzen was given the odd chance to play halfback when Lui was injured or suspended but by then his confidence was ruined. Tats all history and at fullback, hes terrible. Cant catch a bomb and lets the ball bounce more than any other fullback in the comp. We have a cheaper and better option in Tedesco.
Tuqiri - Dont need to say much here.
I would have said Heighinton too if he were still here.
With the above players gone, i reckon we’re saving more than $1.5 - $2 million in the cap already.
In this scenario, happy shopping Tigers!
This is what we need!
Great post, I agree 100%. I do feel the benji issue is the biggest issue. I have felt for the past 2 years that a shift to fullback was an option but can see tedesco is our future.
I also think the coaching support staff should follow, skando, Royce and Leeds. To long and comfortable and no signs of development under them. The club has to stop being full of good blokes and become professional and only judged by results.

Iv been reading since the start of the season all you guys on the forum making very valid points about players and staff who should be let go of next year, but in my opinion im a firm believer that for the club we all love to move forward and remain competative there are two key areas that need to be addressed ASAP. Firstly the main clean out that need’s to occur is the current board. I was a Balmain supporter, was being the main word im now a WESTS TIGERS supporter. I dont see how our club will ever be a continual force year in and year out with these children we have running the board. Its diabolical and they have a lot to answer for. We need a new board one that supports the wests tigers, not Balmain or Western Suburbs. Hell id settle for people in the corporate world who have never seen a game of league. It would beat having a board who spend their time playing tit for tat for their club loyalties i.e. wests, balmain. On the Wests Tigers dime. We dont need these fools our club is bigger and greater than them. The sooner we cut them loose the sooner the Wests Tigers will become a real club. No matter who we used to support we all agree now we support the wests tigers why should the board be any different ? Theres a generation of kids who only know Wests Tigers and for them the board clean out must happen. I dont care if your dawn fraser i dont care if you run Wests Ashfield you’ve all proven to me with you’re petty squabbaling and mismanagement of the club we love you’re all useless and incompetent and sorry you’ve all gotta go. The board is fractured between two camps another word for fractured is broken and how can something broken work ?
Secondly the medical staff. Every year we are decimated with injuries, at some point when the players dont perform we drop them, why should the backroom staff be any different. At bear minimum a review of our training, medical and rehab systems and personnel must be reviewed, its great to have a fantastic first team but only when they are able to take the field. But honestly the players need some mongrel, three weeks for turf toe what would happen to them if guys like Les Boyd were still running around, i’d hate to think. I’m sorry my post is so long but iv been dirty on th board for years, they’re useless what do you guys all think ?
Its o.k to let Players go, but if they have contracts it still costs us money, Benji 2 years to go & they have started talks to extend his contract. Lawrence still has 2 years minimum left on his contract, big money,Mo
ltzen signed a new contract last year. Ayshford still has a year or two to run on his contract would cost us money as well. Maybe we should be looking @ Lottie, Reddy, Utai & maybe Bell & a few others who contracts are finishing up this year.
Disagree about Benji and Tuqiri. Tuqiri is being paid PER MATCH, who cares if he is injured 24/7 because his presence drew Koroibete to the tigers! And is likely to do the same to other aspiring Fijians!!! If Tuqiri leaves, Koro could quite easily be poached
Also, Benji “hasn’t played well in 2 or 3 seasons, maybe 4”?? what!? golden boot in 2010, lead us to the top 4 again in 2011. That makes ONE season he was off and he still created 37 try assists most the in comp. BUT he created 41 errors, also most in the comp. So he still has it attacking wise just needs to cut down in errors which he has done this year! Unfortunately, being shutout one game and held to 10 another; breaking his toe and being sick in the eels game has hampered his success greatly. He could easily come back and lead us into the 8 as long as the forwards remain intact
But, I agree on the cleanout of the board. Good points there, but unfortunately it’ll take time….
Also, a cleanout of the team wouldn’t go amiss. But we should target players off contract or with 1 year to go. Because it’ll cost us a BUTTLOAD if we start firing people like benji; we’ll be paying more than we are paying sheens right now.
First to go:
Miller (if he doesnt turn around in nsw cup) 80k
Looking at around 1.2 million plus the salary cap increase and we have 1.5million to shop around with!
Has it been confirmed that Lote is on match payments?
That would be interesting given I thought the salary cap had rules around that sort of thing.
Could have sworn he was…if he’s not. Get him to retire and involve him in the club in some way to ensure marika stays here. While, I doubt marika is a major flight risk since hes introverted might as well have him play here in 2011, 12, 13 and 14 with Lote at the club than have the slight possibility of losing him to the sharks or eels.
Benji didn’t cost us a place in the GF when we played the Warriors…even if we had won that game we still had to play the Storm down in Melbourne to qualify for the GF. No certainty there. I agree he ain’t the consistent player we would all love to have here at WT, but it is also true that currently when he doesn’t play we get beaten nearly every single time.
Ayshford and Lawrence definitely need to be moved on, Jamie Lyon is off contract at the end of 2013, we should throw some big money his way to get him here, he is a consistent week to week quality player that very rarely has a bad game.
I agree that a lot of players are under-performing, but the answer is often not as simple as a mass clean out. By and large and subject to a few anomalies, you get what you pay for and its finding the right type of player for your club that fits into a specific role you need. Melbourne does that well, but we dont have an underlying method just yet so how would we know which players to buy to support it?
If you look at the best tigers players over time, most have been local juniors. We’ve had some good buys too, but most have been duds. In my opinion the best solution is finding and developing NYC talent. It comes cheaper and usually with more loyalty.
I too would have a very serious think about Benji’s contract when its up. It really depends on what we have in the halves by the time his contract is up, but if either brooks or moses make the next step, Benjis bargaining power will be significantly diminished. He may rediscover form, but it gets harder when you approach 30 and beyond. I dont see Benji as the type of player that can add tremendous value when he gets older. Lockyer was a leader, an organiser, and he had a great footballing brain and a cool head. This allowed him to player effectively for a few extra years and add value. I dont think we can expect that out of Bunj.
