Paul Fletcher wants players to be more ruthless

Wests Tigers NSW Cup Coach Paul Fletcher says his team needs to be more ruthless following missed opportunities in recent games.
The sixth-placed Wests Tigers have won three of their seven matches after losing their opening two games to Cronulla and Windsor.
The side then went on a three game winning streak in beating Manly, Wentworthville and the Bulldogs, before losing last round to Auckland Vulcans following the bye.
“We need to be ruthless and relentless about what we are doing. We have been in positions in every game this year to win,’’ Fletcher said.
“I know there are plenty of points in us but I am not there to satisfy the people watching. I am there to win games.”
Poor discipline cost Wests Tigers against the Sharks while the round two match saw the side go down 44-42 to Windsor in a match Fletcher says his players ‘left their shoulders at home’.
“How do you score 42 points and still not win a match at this level of competition,’’ Fletcher asked.
Things clicked into gear with a 50-22 thumping of Manly in round three before the side recorded a two point victory over Wentworthville a week later.
Fletcher then had to sit by and watch his side almost throw the two competition points away in the win over the Bulldogs.
“We led 22-12 against the Bulldogs and a few of the boys were thinking we are home. A couple of costly errors put us in a position where we could have lost that match,’’ he said.
Last weekend’s loss to the Vulcans in Auckland was ‘the one that got away’ according to Fletcher after Wests Tigers scored two tries in six minutes to set up victory in the second half.
“It was so frustrating. We should have won that one,’’ Fletcher offered.
A heavy injury toll to the Wests Tigers first grade side has seen Ava Seumanufagai, Sitaleki Akauola, Sauaso Sue and Shaun Spence promoted from the NSW Cup team to make their NRL debuts.
Fletcher’s men face a real challenge next week when Wests Tigers play three matches in seven days.
Following this Sunday’s clash against the Bears at North Sydney Oval, Wests Tigers back up on Wednesday, May 8, against Illawarra Cutters at Leichhardt Oval at 7.30pm, as part of a catch up fixture.
Wests Tigers then travel to Newcastle Sports Ground (number 2 oval) on Sunday, May 12, to play the Knights at 3pm.
