Balmain Leagues paying Mr Elias $21k a month

Balmain Leagues Club settles dispute with Rozelle Village

The Balmain Leagues Club has settled its dispute with developer Rozelle Village, five months after its injunction to prevent any bid to place the club into receivership.

An intriguing detail of the agreement stipulates the club must hand over “copies of any correspondence, emails, text messages, invoices, reports or other written material” it has received from developer Benny Elias in the past 12 months.

Documents obtained by Fairfax Media reveal the Balmain Tigers rugby league legend appears to have been receiving monthly payments of more than $21,000 from the club, despite walking away from Rozelle Village in August last year and holding no formal role with the club since 2009.

The club’s spokesman Danny Munk said the amount was an ongoing “administration fee” it was required to pay under a contractual arrangement with Rozelle Village.

“We’ve been instructed by Rozelle Village to make payments that we owe them to Ben Elias,” he said.

Rozelle Village was a joint venture between Mr Elias and Ian Wright when it bought the financially embattled club’s headquarters for $1 in 2009 in return for taking over its debts of $23.5 million.

A new clubhouse was part of Rozelle Village’s controversial high-rise redevelopment bid, which was killed off by planning authorities in April.

Mr Wright, who has fallen out with his former business partner, said the administration fee was negotiated by Mr Elias and “Rozelle Village wanted nothing to do with it”.

“[Rozelle Village] directed the club, if it felt it was obliged to make the payments, that they weren’t to be made to Rozelle Village, they were to be made to Elias,” he said.

    Mr Elias declined to comment.

The club, which sought the Supreme Court injunction in March, withdrew its legal action when it reached an agreement with Rozelle Village on Friday.

In a joint statement with Rozelle Village, the club said they would both work with Leichhardt Council “to find a solution to their development concerns which have prevented the club from returning to its heartland at Rozelle”.

“The only solution to facilitate a return of the Club to Rozelle is a planning solution, and it is vital that Leichhardt Council become part of that solution,” Mr Munk said.

According to the new terms, the club’s right to lease premises at the site may be terminated if development consent is not granted by a “sunset date” of November 29 next year.

But Mr Wright said the relationship with the club was “back on track” and both were committed to proceed with plans to develop the Victoria Road site.

“It has always been our preference to work with the Balmain Leagues Club through its financial situation and facilitate its return to a new Club at Rozelle,” Mr Wright said.

Leichhardt’s mayor Darcy Byrne welcomed the agreement, saying “it’s not too late for the developer to compromise and propose a much smaller scale development”.

“Rozelle Village’s last three development proposals have been rejected by the State Government due to concerns they would have brought traffic on Victoria Rd to a standstill,” Cr Byrne said.

“The Council, the developer and the State Government should now act responsibly to achieve a sensible redevelopment that won’t turn Rozelle into Bondi Junction.”

  • He wasn’t worth that much as a footballer , let alone an “advisor” LOL

  • Hmm, we can only hope that the ‘copies of correspondence’ are worth waiting for. I’d like to see what his advice was. Makes me wonder why the development was in limbo for such a long time?

  • Liked him as a player, but never had time for Benny the person.

  • He’s not involved with Rozelle Village so won’t see any money from the future development.
If he put up the money to cover the debt he’d have to be getting something back from them - and the money Balmain pay is diverted from Rozelle Village.
More than likely it’s owed to him.
If I lent someone over 20 million I’m bloody sure I’d want something back.

  • This is the part that concerns me:

‘According to the new terms, the club’s right to lease premises at the site may be terminated if development consent is not granted by a “sunset date” of November 29 next year.’

So the developer can keep playing silly buggers for another 15 months and then not have to involve the tigers any longer? Makes me think this could have been the plan all along.

  • Wow! This question about payment to Elias was raised at the Balmain AGM and the old cronies completely denied that it occurred or any knowledge of payments to Elias.

Appears they will do anything to keep their board places. I was happy with the board meeting and was prepared to forgive handing jobs for mates to people like Nick Di Girolama without an actual vote and completely disregarding its own constitution, but this just shows what a bunch of amateurs this board is. 😠 😠 😠

Anybody know what can be done to call an extraordinary meeting to have the board replaced after lying to its members??

Which AGM did you ask the question at? From memory I thought you said you went to the Football club AGM but skipped the Leagues Club? Or do I have that wrong?

It’s not as simple as that. The club would be paying Rozelle Village regardless - it appears to be part of the commercial arrangement they have. Rozelle Village have advised the Leagues Club to pay Elias instead. I gather from the article that if Elias wasn’t getting the money then Rozelle Village or more specifically Ian Wright would. Effectively Elias is getting the money off Rozelle Village/Ian Wright.

Mind you the club he is taking from is the club that allowed for him to be the multi millionaire he is today. When the club got him he was nothing but a clueless 17 year old his footballing connections thru Balmain made him and the way he repays them is repeatedly stabbing them as the club lies on a critical condition with the chaplain reads it its last rites. This is the second hooker this year from the club to of been accused of raping it of its integrity.Firstly farah now Elias.Maybe its a hooker thing. 😃 😃

Maybe a case of what is the truth….

  • So what are the extra payments to Benny for if Balmains Debt has been cleared?
