Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson is resigned to losing members of his premiership-winning side and has already started planning for the next generation coming through at the club.

Robinson is aiming to become the first coach in history to win back-to-back grand finals in his opening two seasons as a head coach, but admits any long-term success will depend on the development of the club’s junior programs. “We started this when I was here back in 2010,” said Robinson, who was an assistant to former coach Brian Smith during his first stint with the Roosters before heading to Super League club Catalans.

"It began with Brian building the team up and me then getting the chance to take over when I did. "I knew it was really good rosters to perform with … we’ve got enough young guys here with the salary cap that we are in a good position. "We won’t be able to keep them all, so you have to make sure your junior pathways are developed to produce the next group of stars. “That’s where you get continuity.”

With the likes of Sonny Bill Williams, Mitchell Pearce, Michael Jennings, Jake Friend and James Maloney, the Roosters have a star-studded roster. However, Robinson said the club’s success is down to hard work and not just having superstar players. “We have definitely invested a lot in this group over the last five, six, seven years,” he said.
“We have to make sure that the juniors coming through are going to replace those guys.”

  • Yea they will lose a few players and probably be cellar dwellers again and then they will buy another premiership by buying all the good players on the market at the time

  • This story will be a precursor to them signing some big money player no doubt tomorrow

Just so we can’t accuse them of cheating the cap

  • Accuse them? I thought it was a fact lol

Surely the departure of Money Bill will free up a hell of a lot of cap space. I can’t see them losing anyone of great value.

  • The Roosters have never been over the cap. They are a well run club that spend their 15 mil a year wisely. Players get a base salary of what they report to the league and the rest comes in the form of a credit card. Look at el cheapo Sonny Bill, who’s only on $400k, the poor bloke still hasn’t spent a cent from his contract money from the Roosters. It’s one big yellow brick road with a rainbow at the end of it, if your good enough. NRL cap auditors have no chance of auditing financial institutions. Master v Apprentice.
