MARSHALL LEADS RACE FOR MOST CLUB TRIES
      By Wayne Cousins
      Saturday, 27 March 2010

Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall has overtaken winger Daniel Fitzhenry in the race to become the record holder for most tries for the club.

Marshall bagged two tries in the round two loss to the Sydney Roosters to move from 41 to 43 tries in 105 games for the Wests Tigers. In doing so, he equalled Fitzhenry’s record of 43 tries in 119 games.

He then backed it up with two tries in the win over Parramatta to move to 45 tries in 106 - four clear of Fitzhenry.

Fitzhenry returned to the Wests Tigers this season after a two year stint with Hull KR in the English Super League in 2008-09. His experience and utility value has seen him play the first three rounds to take his tally to 43 tries in 122 games for the club.

Lurking in the background is giant winger Taniela Tuiaki who sits on 42 tries in 78 games for Wests Tigers.

Tuiaki enjoyed his finest season in 2009, scoring 21 tries in 22 games to set a record for most tries for the club in a season.

The barnstorming winger is still recovering from the ankle injury suffered in round 24 against the Eels last year. His return date remains indefinite.

Wests Tigers centre Chris Lawrence is just a few strides behind Tuiaki’s 42 tries, having scored 36 tries in 68 games since bursting on the NRL scene as a schoolboy in round 21 of the 2006 season.

Marshall remains the odds on favourite to set the all time record for most tries for Wests Tigers after recently signing a new deal that keeps the superstar at the club until the end of 2015.

Most tries for Wests Tigers (top 10)

      1: 45 Benji Marshall in 106 games
      2: 43 Daniel Fitzhenry in 122 games
      3: 42 Taniela Tuiaki in 78 games
      4: 38 Brett Hodgson in 102 games
      5: 36 Chris Lawrence in 68 games
      6: 34 Robbie Farah in 119 games.
      7: 32 Ben Galea in 150 games
      8: 30 Kevin McGuinness in 54 games
      9: 30 Paul Whatuira in 58 games
      10: 30 John Wilson in 62 games.

      Most tries in a season
      21 Taniela Tuiaki in 22 games, 2009
      20 Pat Richards in 28 games, 2005
      18 Paul Whatuira in 27 games, 2005.

Generally centres are not try scoring machines in the modern era. They are a big part of the structure and Chris is a reach key to that left side

Lawrence may be scoring less tries but his defence is just outstanding, the hit on Reddy last night was right in front of us and just spectacular. He prefers Centres so as long as he keeps playing well and will play Origin sooner rather than later.
