NRL throw financial muscle behind promotion of Monday night games
March 27, 2010
The NRL will pay clubs $40,000 for hosting Monday night matches in a move designed to help increase attendances for the final game of the weekly round.
The $1 million investment was announced on Saturday, and the NRL said the money will be used to support promotion of matches and offset some of the challenges clubs face attracting crowds for the fixtures.
"Monday Night Football has become an important part of the week for all fans but there is no doubt that it presents some challenges at times in terms of scheduling for clubs,’’ said NRL chief executive David Gallop in a statement.
"Monday night attracts a different fan base from some of our other timeslots and, while the crowds have been encouraging, we have always recognised that it is a long term proposition to consistently deliver crowd averages as strong as those on Friday night, Saturday night or Sunday afternoon.
"The extra investment in Monday night football is a reminder of the commitment we have to the timeslot and to the clubs who play such a role in its success.’’

WT should apply to play all their $F$ games on a Monday night!!
May as well get loaded up on the money with a double cash whammy while they are giving up their traditional home grounds!!
This could go a long way to funding the LO and CS projects to get them done sooner rather than later!!
-
Sorry CT but we will never see WT playing all their home games at Cambo and Leichhardt again. The only thing that would chage this is Campbelltown getting a capacity increase and massive upgrade to 30,000 seats. And even in this case we would only see 2 games at Leichhardt max.
If you look at the AFL they play all of their matches at the big stadiums. At some point in time it will be the smae for the NRL, maybe at least 10 years away but it will happen. If member numbers continue to gorw at the rates they are the grounds will be sell outs before the season commences at LO/CSS.
Its a harsh reality but a reality in deed.

Ditch Monday night footy. It’s so crap.
Play the game on a Sunday afternoon and the NRL wouldnt have to waste this $1mil on extra promotion!

Agree 100%, except I’d make it a Saturday afternoon, it would make it a super-duper Saturday of footy
3.30 game
5.30 game
7.30 gameMonday night footy does provide a small bonus in the fact that it gives me something to look forward to when I’m stuck at work on the worst day of the week, but generally its just annoying.

Hate monday night footy.Footy rounds should finish on sunday……Make it Sunday night Footy…scrap monday footy

Monday shouldn’t be game day…it should be recovery day

I think the Friday 630 timeslot is a bit early. Maybe if they kept both Friday games at 730, Fox could show one live, Ch 9 the other?
The more games on Sunday, the better. Monday is a crap night for footy but the NRL seem set on keeping it around? IMO this is one of the biggest issues surrounding fans … they hate it!

The perfect lineup imo…
Fri - 6.30
Fri - 8.30Every game that started at 8:30 so far this year has had a pathetic crowd. Souths and the Titans barely even cracked 10k in their game last week, and last night starting at 8:30 the Titans recorded their lowest ever crowd at Skilled. Also, 6:30 is too early too start, 7:30 is a fine starting time for Friday night.
-
That’s interesting considering that the game on Friday night was at 7:30 QLD time. I think your logic is a bit flawed.

Haha exactly… Was about to point out the same thing

Which one? Both rounds 2 and 3 have had Friday games kick off at 8:30 local time.

Monday Night Football is here to stay peeps.

I assume this announcement is retrospective, so we get our cash for round 1…
