    In today’s SMH word is out that big 144kg Sam Kasiano can eat 7 kebabs at one sitting, gee that puts Artie Beetson in the shade. I thought he was only good for four pies? It is a shame they are in different eras otherwise they could have it out on Cronulla Beach - Jasmin restaurant Verses Big Ben

    Sam Kasiano sheds 13kg as Canterbury Bulldogs forwards adapt to interchange cut

    Sam Kasiano has been known to eat seven kebabs in one sitting so it was no great surprise to Canterbury teammates that he returned to training during the off-season weighing 144kg, but the incentive of playing in the NRL Nines motivated him to shed 13kg.

    Kasiano, who played 38 minutes off the interchange bench in last Friday night’s 28-6 thumping of Manly, is one of a number of Bulldogs forwards who have trimmed down during the summer to adapt to the reduction in interchanges from 10 to eight.

    Giant second-rower Tony Williams has dropped four kilos, while lock Greg Eastwood is down from 116kg to 111kg.

    Eastwood and Kasiano made a pact to lose weight after Canterbury coaching staff set the players targets.

    Kasiano was desperate to travel to Auckland for the Nines and the New Zealand Test prop was told he could play in the tournament if he met his weight goal.

    He is now the lightest he has been in the NRL after cutting out fast food and doing extra training.

    Williams said Bulldogs coach Des Hasler wanted the players to lose weight

    “I lost three to four kilos compared to what I was playing at last year,” Williams said. "The other boys did too. A lot of it was mental and I knew what I had to do.

    “He likes to keep the players out there and with the amount of training we did in the pre-season we’re ready for anything.”

    With two free interchanges after Sea Eagles centre Steve Matai (high tackle) and back-rower Martin Taupau (shoulder charge) were placed on report, Hasler did not use his full complement of eight interchanges in the match.

    As a result, Williams played the full 80 minutes for the first time since round three last year.

    “I think with this team we didn’t use all of our interchanges [on some occasions] last year and I think it’s very beneficial for us that it came down anyway,” he said. "We’re lucky we’ve got players like James Graham, Aiden Tolman and David Klemmer who can play massive minutes.

    “In saying that, Sam and Greg can play those big minutes too now. They’re more explosive players. I don’t think the interchange has made a big difference as [often] we didn’t use all our interchange last year.”

    After recovering from a season-ending knee injury last year, Williams said he was more focused on his preparation and making sure he was in the best condition to play.

    “It was very frustrating getting injured early in the year but maybe it was the wake-up call to get myself right and be more efficient and professional in my approach to footy - not just the on-field stuff, but my rehab and everything that goes with that,” he said.

    “Being out for that long it makes you think about doing a bit more recovery or looking after your rehab. That’s what I did in the pre-season and hopefully I can stay injury free this year”.

  • How in the Hell can someone eat 7 Kebabs in a hit 😮 .

    I once had 2 Kebabs for Lunch and felt so sick afterwards….every time I walked ? I felt like I was going to throw up.

    Kasiano looked sharp vs Manly there going to benefit the extra minutes they get out of him.

    My cousins are half Lebanese, so I grew up on Middle Eastern food. Absolutely love the stuff.
