    ISP Trial: Team vs. Newtown

    Brock Corfe

    Thu 16th February, 08:27PM

Wests Tigers’ Intrust Super Premiership side will play the Newtown Jets this Saturday in a trial match at Henson Park.

In what will be the final pre-season match before Round 1, Head Coach David Heath has named a strong 21-man squad for the encounter.

The forward pack will be considerably bolstered by NRL squad members Wesley Lolo, JJ Felise, Junior Tatola, Taniela Paseka and Bayley Sironen.

Paseka will play his first match of the year, having missed the NRL Auckland Nines and last weekend’s trial due to a shoulder injury.

Felise will not feature in tomorrow night’s NRL trial match as named earlier in the week, with the young prop looking to play big minutes in the ISP clash against Newtown.

Sironen, who was also named in the first-grade squad to play the Cowboys, may end up featuring in both the NRL and ISP games this weekend.

The team also includes four Holden Cup squad members in Ryan Papenhuyzen, Toa Mata’afa, Tony Tali and Daniel Peck – who will be looking to impress in the senior grade.

The match will be the second pre-season hit-out for Heath’s side, who defeated the Wentworthville Magpies 16-8 on Monday night.

Peck, Jackson Williams, Darcy Cox and Jaleel Seve scored the side’s four tries in the win at Ringrose Park.

The match will be the second-game at the ground on Saturday, with Wests Tigers Holden Cup opening the program at 4pm before the Intrust Super Premiership game at 6pm.

  • There’s some size on the forward pack which is good to see. Felise, Tatola and Paseka on the bench is quite a sight.

  • Felise is wasted there!

  • @sheer64:

    Felise is wasted there!

No, if Felise is going to get a run in early part of year in first grade it will be off the bench. So makes sense to trial there.

Also named to trial in NRL side too remember.

  • I’m sure they just want to up Felise’ playing time before round 1 which probably wouldn’t be realistic if he was just playing reggies.

great result, we always had problems with the Jets, hopefully there were no injuries 🙏

  • Milone as captain?

  • Just back from the game. So great to sit and get cold and wet and watch the footy! Jason Taylor was there.

Peck was the pick of the players for mine. Felise was very strong but dropped the ball a couple of times cold (it was wet). Paseka is enormous, but was a magnet for defenders. Masters is very fast and skilful for his size.

Junior Tatola was the best of the forwards. Really great repeated carries. Tali put on some big hits.

Wests looked terrific and slick in the first ten minutes, running in three tries. Middle of the game scrappy and lots of dropped ball (but there were lots of different combinations). In first half Milone came off with concussion and didn’t return. Also Armstrong seemed to have picked up a shoulder injury.

FYI Cherrington played well, but it was a weakened Jets side as Sharks had a lot of players in UK.

Thanks for the review of the players. Tatola and Tali are fine prospects.

  • Thanks Full80! Great to see we have so many young Forward prospects in reserve grade, playing against men. Not just junior grades. So by the end of this year a couple could be debuting as NRL players. For the balance of the NRL team…I’m hoping it’s Marsters, as backrow is our weakest position.
*Still I wouldn’t be complaining if one of the others were demanding to be picked in NRL through their performance in ISP.
