Matt Ballin Retires Effective Immediately

  • Officially announced today. Best of luck.

  • Coaching role?

  • Wouldn’t be surprised if he was handed a lower grade clipboard.

    Coaching role?

Yep, for the rest of the season and hopefully the coming years.

Best possible mentor for Liddle at the moment.

  • Freeing up cap space, Maybe another player joining us this season.

  • Clearly not our best buy but, from all reports, a thoroughly decent human being who deserves respect for his achievements on the field for Manly and his contribution to our club from off the field. Wish him well for his future.

  • Didn’t work out on the field but seems to have been great within the community. Good to see he’s staying on to help coach for the rest of the season. Maybe next year too if it works out for all involved. Enjoy your retirement, Matt.

  • I’d assume its for cap space. That doesen’t nessecarily mean a new player coming in from outside but what it does mean is
    1. We may be able to get a medically retiered so his money for the rest of this year is outside the cap.
    2. Means we might be able to bring in a player from outside the top 25 but this might be internal or external
    3. Also means that if we might pay a player ahead for next year with the money from this years cap if we bring up a young guy
    4. It might free up 2nd tier cap space by bringing the payments for someone like Masters or Eisenhuth into the top 25 and out of the 2nd tier cap

  • Head trainer sign him up blokes a fitness guru. Its a shame he would of provided us with alot more around the ruck….Barrett did the right thing forcing him from Manly too

WT reminds me of the Gold Coast - God’s waiting room. But nothing against the guy of course and good luck to him. Could he kick good grubbers in his day?

That’s awesome if true. Hopefully stays at the club for a while, appears to be a generally good influence and would be a great mentor for Liddle and others.

  • Good luck for the future mate, he was a JT buy to force Farah out, felt sorry for him stuck in the middle.
Hope he can hang around and try instill some work ethic to our younger blokes.

  • A gamble that certainly didn’t pay off. A shame he was never fit enough to take the field in any meaningful capacity. Hopefully he spends the rest of the year working on the staff, by all accounts he’s a positive influence off the field.
