After a dream 2017 season so far, Wests Tigers rookie forward Alex Twal says he wants to continue to put his best foot forward and make the year the best he can.

A regular in Ivan Cleary’s forward pack since a superb first-grade debut against the Newcastle Knights in Round 17, the Lebanese World Cup hopeful said he was relishing the opportunities afford to him throughout season 2017, and simply wants to ensure he caps off the year in the best way possible by carrying his form through to the end of Round 26.

“I’m just enjoying getting used to playing week-in and week-out,” Twal said.

“It’s good fun trying to match it against some of the best players in the sport.

“I think the culture around the Club has really been positive in the last few weeks.”

“Everyone is really playing for each other, we’re playing for the coaching staff and we’re playing for the fans, so everyone is just focused on putting our best foot forward and ending the year on a positive and giving us something to take in to 2018.”

Despite only just turning 21, Twal has shown no hesitation settling in to first-grade — averaging over 100 metres and 30 tackles in just over 42 per minutes per game.

Incredibly, Twal has missed just two tackles all year to lead Wests Tigers with a 99 percent tackle completion rate, but says he’s simply enjoying being in first-grade.

“I’m just trying to make sure every week I’m consistent with my performances,” he said.

“I think that’s the key to being a good first-grader — being consistent every week.

“As a team we’ve got to make sure we’re focused on bouncing back from each game.

“We’ll just try and build on our performance from the week before, and that starts on Sunday against Manly so hopefully we’ll come away from that with the win.”

  • Go you good thing!!

  • Twal, Matulino, Packer, Mcqueen, Lawrence, MCK- we’re gonna have quite a tall pack next year

  • The big thing with Twal in my opinion is…he is playing with a purpose, not by name or reputation but a purpose to keep on playing FG and doing everything asked of him by the coaching staff and doing it for the members and fans…if he keeps going he will be a very popular and revered player for this club…well done Alex and keep up the good work…

  • We only have him until 2020…

We should extend that by a few years. This guy is the future of our club and will be a key figure in our forward pack for many years to come.

People may have said this about Brooks and Tedesco but if we lock this guy up, I am sure he will deliver. This is more has shown more than potential… He has had a great junior rep career and his first-grade stats match it with a State of Origin prop every week in the same team.

    Massive Fan…

Only till 2020? That’s 3 years. A long time in footy. No need to go crazy.

  • I read that he has a 99% tackle efficiency rating.
Kid has all the tools and attitude to go places. Hats off to the recruitment team these signings make teams.

In NYC he was making 40 tackles a game with zero missed tackles.

Doesn’t surprise me his technique is sound at NRL level.
Quite rare for a prop at his age. Sometimes young players flash potential but Twal looks made for first grade.
Will be a scary prospect if he can gain 5kgs of muscle.

  • He looks great doesn’t he. Eisenhuth going well too. However I thought our forward pack was dominated by Penrith defence last week and Mats and Packer can’t come soon enough.

It looked that way but if you watch the game again and focus on how far the badge was getting penriths defensive line back they were about 8 metres back max!! everytime. Allowing penrith to dominate the ruck.

Not to mention the dimwitted tactic of having a back line utility sitting on the bench unused when another forward would make the world of difference to our pack fatigue-wise. No surprise that we would get dominated up front playing a forward short.

  • I would consider starting Twal next year with Packer. Matulino can play big minutes off the bench as rotation with Packer with Sue for impact as Twal interchange(assuming that Grant leaves)

  • If he doesn’t miss a tackle this week, he’ll have the best tackle percentage in the NRL for the season.

  • Very promising young forward should learn a lot from Mats and Packer and at least he has a decent hair style .
