Tigers aim for new attacking flair in 2018

  • Ivan Cleary will aim to bring back the Wests Tigers’ attacking flair of old mixed with a new-found determination as he stamps his authority on the NRL club.

Cleary is halfway through his first pre-season at the Tigers, after joining the club last April and bringing with him several new faces through the pre-season.

The Tigers scored the second least points in the NRL last year, a far cry from when they were one of the competition’s most exciting teams through their positive style and play.

However that is set to change in 2018.

“We want to be a side that takes our opportunities,” veteran Chris Lawrence said.

"We want to be a side that if we see space out wide we can shift the ball and throw it around where need be.

"It’s been really good having a couple of different halves playing different styles.

“It’s really good for those guys. It gives them good experience in playing both sides of the part and being able to shift the footy when we can.”

Lawrence led a junior clinic in Campbelltown on Thursday, and the local junior is considered the front-runner to be named the team’s skipper ahead of their first-round clash with the Sydney Roosters on March 10.

Clearly is holding off on a final decision given the number of new senior players at the club this season, including Russell Packer, Josh Reynolds, Ben Matulino and Benji Marshall.

The quartet are among up to seven players who could be fresh into the side for round one, which Lawrence said had created the most driven environment in his 13 years at the Tigers.

“I think it’s a more determined club,” he said.

“We’ve got so many players coming from other squads and some have probably not left on great terms so a lot have a point to prove.”

Lawrence said the club was also relishing a drama-free off-season, following last year’s contract issues surrounding the likes of Aaron Woods, James Tedesco and Mitchell Moses.

The Tigers have the least amount of players off contract of all clubs in 2018, with the majority of their first grade team locked up.

“We don’t have cameras following us from the car park to training, so that’s a plus,” Lawrence said.

"In pre-season it’s a good sign when you don’t have media following you every day.

“It makes a difference when you have an environment at training when you can just focus on football. That’s massive.”

    I hope it is winning.

Average points conceded per game in 2017 without Cleary as coach: 30
Average points conceded per game in 2017 with Cleary as coach: 21.4 (disregarding the Brisbane game)

Now imagine what Cleary can do with a better squad…

Yes/No. I think there have been years where our attack has been right and our defense totally hopeless. At the end of the year we would be in the top 5 point-scorers and out of the 8.

I think it is good as Cleary seems to be reading the team as well as building it. He can see that we will have a strong passing game and I hope he will coach to it. But we cant win games 32-30 anymore. Cleary appears to have hired players on Grit for this reason.

  • I wasnt referring to attack at all….i meant the process of defense. however if youre defending capably the result youre after is much much easier.
it’s one thing to have great attack but if you have to score 6 times to win because your defense isnt up to it…youll lose more than you win without a.doubt
