Cleary: “We need to go back to basics”

Wests Tigers Head Coach Ivan Cleary said his side have to improve on the simple things as they look to turn around a run of three straight defeats next Thursday when they take on the North Queensland Cowboys at Leichhardt Oval.

Run down by a dominant Warriors side in their Round 8 clash, Wests Tigers were made to pay for their poor handling with just 40% possession and a 66% completion rate handing the hosts a 22-point win.

And for Cleary, it was clear that the side needed to return to doing the basics right.

“I think tonight was the first time this year we weren’t in it for 80 minutes,” Cleary said.

"The Warriors took their opportunities and built pressure really well, and they just played better.

"Certainly in the last two weeks, we’re definitely not controlling the ball as well as we were.

“Our rhythm with the ball hasn’t been there, so we need to go back to basics. When you get the basics right, you give yourself a chance to win games, but we just didn’t do that tonight.”

Trailing by eight points at half-time, Wests Tigers had their moments early in the second half but couldn’t come up with the right option in attack, with a second sin-bin killing off the visitors chance at a comeback.

“We just got off on the wrong foot,” Cleary said. "We started to show signs that we were coming back and I wasn’t too disappointed at half-time but we couldn’t nail our opportunities and made too many mistakes.

"On the other hand, they scored off two repeat sets and just built pressure really well.

"They had 15 extra completed sets, we had two guys in the bin and two tries while that happened.

"The first sin bin was dumb from us and the second one… I didn’t feel like we were deliberately giving them away. They were all different penalties and that was an offside penalty when they were spreading.

“But it’s the refs call and in the context of the game, so he’d have the best answer to that call.”

“To be honest,” he added, " we don’t have time to worry about it. We’ve got a five-day turnaround to face the Cowboys, and [having that short turnaround] might just be a good thing to help us right the wrongs."

You could also start walking the walk by holding them accountable Ivan. Do your job and weild your axe.

I actually thought we looked good with the ball much of the time in the first half. Unfortunately, Benji’s decision making didn’t help us and often killed any momentum we had. Having to play with 12 men for 60 minutes, make 100 extra tackles and have players in the HIA at different times didn’t help our energy, focus and ability to complete sets either.

Back to basics 😆

We’re beyond basic at the moment

I already made the point in the live thread, Cleary has already dropped some 7 players his season. It’s not as if he’s afraid to bring new players in, so just let him do his job?

And if he doesn’t cut anyone specific, it’s probably as much to do with lack of better options than anything else.

Cleary is doing his best with a pretty average roster.

We need everyone available and weened to be fresh.

Were battered and bruised after intense first 6weeks.

It was never sustainable with this roster.

As long as they keep trying Im fine.

2-3 quality players need to be bought then ill judge them harsher.

Love the guys who would defend players under JT (Lovett and rankin for example)to never be dropped now calling out Ivan Cleary. We need luck with injuries and we aren’t getting it. We need liddle out there, we need Reynolds , we need packer. We need the refs to give us a fair go and be consistent and maybe we have a chance.

Not having a shot at you but what does “weened” mean? Is it a football term that I’m not familiar with?

Sorry

We need.

We look really tired.

Lots of missed tackles and play the ball speed opposition are killing us.

We look like we need a bye or two.

Cant see us winning next week.

He is picking the best available every week in my opinion

Some players must go but we need some back before than can happen

At the very least guys like Rochow and Godinet have to go. Rochow started the season well, but has totally lost the plot in recent weeks. Defence has been atrocious. Godinet speaks for himself. To call him a reserve grader would be an insult to reserve graders.

Well players will be available. Lolohea Packer Reynolds Zelezniak .
Truth is if you loose 2 to the headbin before HT and 2 x sin bin you nearly always loose.

Replace a reserve grader with a reserve grader. That will definitely make sure our forwards go forward and we don’t drop the ball or miss tackles. If you were a coach you would be on the big bucks.
