Balmain 80s/90s

Alan Jones was a total disaster, he had zero idea about league and wasnt prepared to listen. He kicked Freeman out of the club by playing him in reggies and bringing in a union half Brian Smith who couldnt organise to save his life but could kick the ball deep.He is the only coach i knew in my 50 years of supporting Balmain as being a coach i disliked. The move to parra was not a good one and was resented by the majority of the supporter base.
The casino was another problem but was totally out of the clubs hands. They were tough years.

the only good thing Smith did was kick that winning field goal against souffs at the SCG in 1993

  • In 1985 we had the team to win the comp. But a certain referee named Mick Stone decided getting a brown paper bag from the Dogs was a better option than refereeing fairly in the final series. And guess who went on to win that year?

85 was the 1st grand final i went to

Only 14 at the time so don’t remember anything about the side we had

I’m guessing we were knocked out in the preliminary final against the dog’s?

No after we lost in Extra time to the Dogs in the first game of the finals when Stone refereed, we had to play our bogey team the Eels next and did not show up. Against the Dogs we scored three fair tries that were all disallowed by Stone, each time Steve Mortimer ran up to him and then no try was signaled. We had a 19 year old Gary Schofield who had come over from England playing that year for us. He was one of the best.

  • Yeah I was at the 85 semi against the Dogs. Got rorted.

I was at that game and as a 1969 tribute entry that day was like 50 cents from memory ala 69 prices also heavily discounted food too.

Yeah Freeman was forced out to accommodate Smith. Jones being Jones he had his favourites and guys like Freeman and Jack (voluntarily got forced out).

What happened? The club was never wealthy but Barnes was an effective administrator. 89 we should have won the comp, 90 we made the finals. Then Jones comes in. 91 we don’t win a game for the first 7 or so rounds. After that we got going but it was too late. 92 and 93 the Jones effect hits. He can’t coach a RL team and it shows. His tactics are poor, his game knowledge non-existence. The team effectively coached itself. 94 he’s replaced by Junior. All Jones’ favourites go and most of the old guard have retired or moved on. Only Siro and Jack returning from England. 94 we run last and never had the cash to turn to around. Keep in mind the comp goes to 20 teams so it’s harder to get talent with new clubs spending money. Then Super Lesgue hits and it’s downhill until the JV.

I thought this was very well summed up.

I have forgotten more than i remember about this time (deliberately) but this is as accurate as it gets.

Jones was a mistake, Pearce was a mistake. it set in play years of disappointment and struggle.

I remember it was the first year of the footy show too when it was only on at Sundays and was decent, they had the pass the ball comp of souffs v Balmain. and did a big thing about 1969. what’s scary is in 1993 that was only 24 years ago. now if we say what was 24 years ago today we get the year 1984!!

  • Been home sick this week, watching random stuff on YouTube, Found myself watching the 89 GF. You always here about the field goal that hit the crossbar, or junior dropping the ball with the line wide open, and all the rest. The match was still there to be won though. With 5 minutes to go in the second period of ET, Jack gets an offload to junior who then puts Brasher up over halfway. He gets tackled on the first, then they proceeded to go nowhere for the next 4 tackles. Horrible.
