Cameron Smith claims Cronulla double-standard, wants Melbourne Storm’s premierships reinstated

    WRITTEN BYSPORTING NEWS

Melbourne captain Cameron Smith has dropped another bombshell on the NRL on the eve of the 2019 season, calling for the Storm’s 2007 and 2009 premierships to be reinstated after Cronulla’s 2016 title was allowed to stand last week.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg last week fined the Sharks $750,000 for multiple salary cap breaches dating back to the 2015 season.

In a major let-off for The Shire club, $500,000 of the penalty was suspended after CEO Barry Russell self-reported to the NRL last August.

The Sharks also copped a $707,000 reduction of their cap to be spread across the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

In announcing the punishment Greenberg declared the Sharks would be allowed to keep their maiden NRL premiership, backing up his previous assertions Cronulla’s cap cheating did not affect their 2016 campaign which ended with a 14-12 grand-final victory over Melbourne.

However, News Limited journalist Paul Kent this week sensationally claimed Cronulla were ‘systematically cheating’ during the 2016 season.

And in another public relations disaster for the embattled code, Smith called for Greenberg to ‘have a look back’ at the Storm’s punishment at Thursday’s 2019 season launch.

“They have a lot on their plate at the moment and I don’t want to take away from some of the things that have happened over the past six months, but if the NRL can have a look back and go over what happened at the Storm over those years, they may find there is a different outcome,” Smith told News Limited.

Smith argued Cronulla’s cap breaches were ‘reasonably similar’ to the Storm’s but received a ‘completely different punishment’.

In addition to losing two NRL titles, the Storm were also stripped of three minor premierships and made to play out the 2010 season for zero points.

Smith praised Greenberg for ‘taking the correct amount of time’ to come to his decision on the Sharks instead of ‘wielding the axe’ like previous administrations.

And the 35-year-old is confident the current CEO would come to a different conclusion on the Storm case should he review the evidence.

Smith will begin his unprecedented 18th NRL campaign for the Storm in next Thursday’s season-opener against the Brisbane Broncos at AAMI Park.

We cheated but so did they and they kept theirs…give us back our trophy Todd…yes Cammy…

  • Even better give us theirs since they beat me…I mean us… anyway

  • He has a point, the Sharks got off too lightly.

  • Cool story

  • Smith was and always will be a cheat in my mind he is a perfect fit for both the storm and the next NRL ceo

  • He is right, they got done for systematic cheating and lost their premierships, why have Cronulla not been done as well? How were they over the cap years leading up to, and after, but somehow were under the cap the year they won the premiership?

  • @Sco77y:

Exactly, I hate Smith, but he is right, Cronulla got off way too light, it was systematic cheating over quite a few years, their title should have been stripped.
I hope Cam and the Storm have more guts than us and take the NRL to court.

  • Karma is going to hit somebody soon big time. Fairness? Consistency? Bull$#!t?

Because the integrity unit said so along with peptides are cool…

  • But Todd Greenberg said they were compliant in 2016.
I’ve copped it on here for calling it as I see it but really it’s plain as day: 2014 - cheats 2015 - cheats 2016 - all good 2017 - cheats 2018 - cheats. That’s what Greenberg wants us all to believe. What a load of garbage.
NRL administration is incompetent (totally reactive and incapable of strategic planning) and corrupt (overlooking sharks 2016). Greenberg is a poor leader and Beattie knows it - why else is Beattie taking all the heat at present. One reason is Greenberg can’t even get his words right (think about his consistency comment). He also makes poor decisions without thinking it through (think about Inglis reference).
Under current administration kids are leaving the game, women (mothers of kids) are disgusted with the game and life long supporters are walking away. This after the previous administration secured the best TV rights deal ever.

It’s offensive that they think the average NRL fan is that gullible. There’s a lot of it going on at the moment, but if you point out their inconsistencies and lies, you’re branded a one-eyed supporter.

  • Please some one tell me how the sharks receive the same penalty in regards to the cap as us, THEY ORGANIZED A COMPANY TO CHEAT THE SYSTEM, we offered a long term player a job, how the hell do they get get a similar cap penalty as us. Greenberg has gone very easy on the sharks compared to us, they must be in bed together.

  • Another day, more dissatisfaction and controversy surrounding the NRL and its leadership.

I’ll say it again 90% of ALL publicity that the NRL has received under Greenberg’s leadership has been negative.

I’ll say it again Greenberg and that Queensland Peanut will be gone before the end of the year.

  • Have to say as much as I think its the pot calling the kettle black, Smith has a very good point- Cronulla has got off very lightly compared to Melbourne.

    Systematic cheating of cap YES
False company front to hide TPA payments YES
Their premiership year compliant when all surrounding years not- HILARIOUSLY FANCIFUL DECEIT BY NRL ADMIN
Banned use of drug enhancers YES
Underhanded communications by coach in spite of clear NRL orders banning YES
Directors involved in dodgy deals for club IT SEEMS SO

What the hell does this club have to do to get thrown out? Shifted to another state?
