Balmain saved from brink of extinction with new leagues club to come

    @bathursttiger:

Just curious are West Ashfield and the Wests at Campbelltown the same operation?

Originally when Wests moved to Cambo the board of Wests Cambo comprised members from Wests Ashfield…soon after the became a separate entity…when the joint venture was formed Wests Cambo Wests Ashfied and Wests Magpies RLFC formed the Wests Group…Wests Cambo had 1 seat on the Wests Tigers board but they relinquished that to Wests Ashfied to free themselve of any financial obligation to Wests Tigers…

They are a separate entity…linked only by name really

  • Im a member at Cambo. A few interesting Directors there ,ie. Steve Noyce and Martin Bullock….I do notice that unlike a couple of years ago there are no AFL jumpers on show nore ARU jumpers, only Wests Tigers. Not sure if there were Magpie Jumpers there.

  • @cktiger:

As usual Darcy Byrne makes it all about himself … and the timing superb with a rider to tell you to vote Labor lol

    Thanks for calling this out,

Let remember this guy is a politician and his no 1 interest is re-election.

    Follow up question

Are Wets Ashfield and Campbeltown affiliated??

Moving forward - is it correct to assume that Wests Ashfield, Tigers club in Flemington and Rozelle will all contribute to the Wets Group and subsequently our Wests Tigers???

  • Wests Cambelltown Club stands on its on.
It once was affiliated but as I understand it they didn’t get on that well with Ashfield. The irony was Ashfield had a better relationship with Balmain.

He’s not up for re-election for another year or two…

  • His state contemporaries are looking to be elected tomorrow though.

  • Well yeah, but Labor also doesn’t have the advantage of Murdoch’s papers and tv shows criticising their opponents and falsely praising everything they do.

So yeah, they use what they can to promote their agenda in the face of great adversity.

  • Thanks Geo

  • There is also the poignant picture of Mundine flat on his back after the Ottke fight.

  • I think there is another thread to discuss politics.

Darcy facilitated this deal, hopefully he can facilitate the site actually being developed.

His council has blocked the development of the site, and now a dilapidated site has been acquired as a dump site, he wants something built there.

He is having an each way bet and regardless of who wins Saturday’s election development of the site will be opposed by nimby splinter groups

true to an extent… Campbelltown sold their share to Ashfield to circumvent the dollar for dollar clause in the old Wests/Balmain charter. Without a large enough stake to make any real change, they sold their share, while at the very least continuing their financial 1/8th obligations though as a sponsorship instead, including carrying some of the weight of the costs of holding games at Campbelltown. They didnt just cash their chips out.

On the article… its good to see Us front foot some positive media. It is a little sad though that many of the fans werent aware of the NRL loan and Balmain Juniors deals until now. Ashfield have been monsters doing both on the quiet for a while, the juniors for years… That said, Im glad they are getting the recognition finally, as I dont think we were mature enough to appreciate it without factional bias.

    Long live Balmain!

Avoided this thread a bit TBH…
    He’s a Politician, buuuuut
I think his hearts in the right place.

  • Maybe he should have some cojones and just go ahead and back the development instead of having an each way bet. These people opposed the development for years and instead will end up with a big dig site which will be a bigger eyesore and spew dust and whatever else over the area.

    Reap what you sow.

  • Statement from Wests Ashfield regarding recent media speculation

Please find below todays release from Wests Ashfield regarding recent media comments made by Darcy Byrne in the Sydney Morning Herald.

The Board of Wests Ashfield wishes to address matters that were raised through a report in The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) of 22 March 2019: “Balmain saved from brink of extinction with new leagues club to come”.

There is a very, very long way to go before achieving the end result of what is the headline covering that story.

No final “deal” has been arranged in relation to the future of Balmain and their leagues clubs, which were put into voluntary administration late last year.

Directors of Wests Ashfield have agreed to become involved in negotiations that ultimately will play a role in determining the future of those clubs.

This action has been taken on the basis that any final outcome of this matter will result in producing arrangements that are commercially viable to the financial and other interests of our Club at Ashfield and to its continuing commitment to supporting our community commitments including Wests Tigers and Wests Magpies.

It should be noted that ultimately, any decision on finalising arrangements will require the approval of members of both Wests Ashfield Leagues and Balmain Leagues.

This is a most important point and, to be fair, it’s one that was mentioned in the second paragraph of the SMH story.

In the short term, business arrangements will continue as they have been regarding all of our operations and Wests Ashfield Leagues Club will continue supporting Wests Tigers and Wests Magpies and junior football in our region.
