Suncorp Stadium has historically never been an easy place to travel to, and Wests Tigers face an added challenge this week as they look to overcome the Broncos at home on Thursday night.
Ever since the inclusion of regular Thursday night football in recent years, Brisbane’s record in the opening game of the round has been nothing short of superb, losing just two fixtures at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday since 2016. In that time, the Broncos have won 11 of their 13 matches and have averaged an impressive 26.9 points per game in attack while conceding just 16.5 per game.
Brisbane’s two losses on Thursday nights in the past few years were also certainly unique fixtures memorably going down to an finals-inspired Parramatta Eels side towards the back end of 2017 in a contest that saw 86 points scored in total.
As for their one other loss?
Well, that came earlier this season when the St. George-Illawarra Dragons pulled off an unlikely victory in Golden Point despite losing playmaker Gareth Widdop, Corey Norman slotting a long range field goal to secure a win for his side.
The history books also show that Wests Tigers haven’t exactly fared the best in their Thursday night games, although there is some recent success to point to.
Prior to last year’s revised draw that saw them play four Thursday games, Wests Tigers had only played four Thursday games in the 18 years prior to that. Good results last year show that the side have now won three of their last five Thursday night games, but crucially, all of those have taken place inside Sydney.
Wests Tigers have never won on Thursday Night Football outside of their Sydney, making this week’s trip up north to face the Broncos an even bigger challenge!
