Wests Tigers Head Coach Michael Maguire said he was proud of the fight shown by his side after they battled bravely against the South Sydney Rabbitohs tonight at ANZ Stadium.

With a strong completion rate and some quality play from likely Origin selections Damien Cook, Cody Walker and Cameron Murray, South Sydney consolidated their spot atop the Telstra Premiership ladder with a 32-16 win over Wests Tigers, who refused to go away and threatened to hit back on several occasions in the match.

While disappointed with the result and the lack of some polish in key situations, Maguire said he was again impressed with the resilience shown by his side.

“This group — they’ll just keep fighting," he enthused.

"The pleasing thing to know is that even though we were down by three tries they were fighting. If they continue to do that, we’ll be able to do what they did out there.

“It’s frustrating for all of us, but we gave ourselves a chance in the second half. We came through and they managed to get some tries off set pieces which the boys have been working at.

Marshall skips to the outside and scores
“We’ve just got to keep working hard, it’s as simple as that," he said.

"If the boys keep turning up and keep doing the things they’re doing, we’ll get there.

“We’re taking each day and we’re growing as group — we’ve just got to make sure we capitalise in these games. The Rabbitohs were able to capitalise on that in the second half, and as a team we need to be better than what we showed tonight.”

    Post-Match: Corey Thomspon
With captain Moses Mbye sidelined with a groin strain, Corey Thompson was a standout for Wests Tigers at fullback, with an incredible 15 tackle breaks and a try standing out to Maguire in an impressive showing by the diminutive Thompson.

“He’s a really good fella," Maguire said of Thompson.

"He competes and you can see in the back end of the game, he’s a little competitor.

"He values what we are as a team and I thought he tried hard.”

Sitting just outside the top eight after tonight’s loss, Wests Tigers will look to bounce back in Round 13 when they take on the Canberra Raiders in the club’s first home game at Bankwest Stadium — a venue they will play four home games at in the space of five weeks as they look to climb back in to the finals race.

    Match: Rabbitohs v Wests Tigers
    ROUND 11 - SATURDAY 25TH MAY

  • We fought. We made errors and stupid mistakes. But when we were down 14-0 we still played and tried to take the game.
Keep fighting guys. Next game against Easts will be hard but we will get there.

  • And to be honest that last try was pure BS - I still don’t think it was a try, I think Murray was offside, and 26-16 is a more fair reflection of the match.

  • Not good enough - yet again

  • Wow broncos are ahead of us on the ladder… sheesh. We are sitting in 10th

  • Yes the refs were on the take but my take away from the game is the energy Souths played with.

  • We always give it our all, but we never get the bikkies. That has to take its toll mentally at some stage. It already has with me!

    The 1st 20 killed us

In sorts it was similar to the Roosters game …
Every time we got back into the game we eased up on the intensity and paid the price

    @Spud_Murphy
It depends on your expectations, I suppose.

I wasn’t disappointed at all with the effort and application our boys showed. I think what it showed is, when both sides play to their potential, Souths (like the Roosters and Storm) just have an edge in “class” of players in key areas. To beat sides like that, this year at least, we need them to be just below their best or to get our fair share of the 50-50 calls. Neither of those happened for us on Sat night.

I agree with others that 26 -16 is a more accurate assessment of the difference and the performance. That last try Souths try was nit-picking rubbish.

  • Good morning to everyone but Souths fans.

    @Cultured_Bogan good morning
Have a wonderful day my bro

    Go the tigers

  • I agree with the Coach and that we keep fighting away but we seem to come up short most of the time… I think if we can win a few and get the confidence up we can go on a roll like the Knights have… (Except opponents don’t rest plays for us like Cronk n Roosters )

I honestly feel if we had the fair share of the calls in the game and that last try not been awarded (because it was not a try) we come away with a win… Any team up against the top team in the comp and down 9-2 in the penalties would of been beaten by 30+… I sometimes wish we had a coach that whinged like Dessie, Flannagan , etc… because the refs know if they don’t give us the fair share they will not hear about it but other coaches bring it up and thats in there mind…

This was a game when we needed to pay the fine and let coach go for it as the game refs were a disgrace.

    Rant over

  • So frustrated by our lack of pace… We asked no questions of souths D… Looked like we were running on a beach and them on a road

I honestly don’t know what happened with the refereeing. We’ve been given a fair go in all of our games for much of the season, then suddenly we are caned and some of the decisions that went against us were just mind boggling.

I have noticed a drop in the standard all round lately though. What started out as a good season with games flowing and refs in the background, has now become a season of whistle-a-thon and dodgy game influencing decisions yet again! Happens every year, It’s almost as inevitable as the Wests Tigers finishing 9th!

  • @innsaneink this is something that needs to be fixed doesn’t it. We lack a threat outside of Thompson in our outside backs.
