Wests Tigers are pleased to announce that young forward Thomas Mikaele has signed a new playing contract with the club.
The new deal will see Mikaele remain with the club until the end of the 2021 season.
Only 21 years of age, Mikaele made his first-grade debut for Wests Tigers earlier this season and has gone on to feature in 10 games so far in 2019.
A graduate of the club’s Jersey Flegg side, Mikaele has been part of the NRL squad since 2018 — where he joined as a Development Player — before moving in to the full-time squad this year and establishing himself as a regular first-grader.
Mikaele said he was excited to have secured his playing future with Wests Tigers.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time at the club since moving here,” Mikaele said.
“Madge has been a really big part of that this year.
"He’s a coach I like and he’s given me great direction about where I can get to as a player, which has given me lots of confidence.
“I’m really enjoying playing my footy and have bought in to the things we want to hold ourselves to as a team, and having my future sorted will allow me to keep focusing on that.”
Wests Tigers Head Coach Michael Maguire said Mikaele had a strong rugby league future that he was excited to see play out at Wests Tigers in the years ahead.
“Since arriving to the NRL level, Thomas has grown immensely and is starting to really understand what is required to compete at the top level,” Maguire said.
“He works extremely hard and applies himself to all aspects of his training, and it is clear he has a bright future if he continues to apply himself every day.
"Thomas is well-respected by all his teammates and coaches, and we’re excited for the opportunity that is there for him to become a long-term forward at Wests Tigers.”
2 re-signings have taken place since the departure of Kelly Egan, definitely looks like Madge is picking and choosing who he wants from this squad.
I thought Egan doesn’t leave until the end of June and no mention of him being on gardening leave
