Rabbitohs and Maroons star Dane Gagai is reportedly seeking a move away from the Rabbitohs.
The Queensland winger is apparently unhappy with being seen as a winger at the club, after the signing of James Roberts.

“Dane Gagai is considering quitting Souths to go elsewhere in the NRL,” Paul Kent told NRL 360.
“Possibly it will be before the June 30 deadline, but possibly after for next season.

“It all stems around the James Roberts signing and he sees himself as a centre and clearly with Roberts coming to the club he has been designated as a specialist winger.” Wayne Bennett has made no secret of his desire to play Gagai on the wing after originally picking him outside Greg Inglis at the start of the season, with Braidon Burns preferred at left centre. Bennett then went and signed his former Broncos’ centre Roberts as a replacement for Inglis, while Burns struggled with injuries.

“I think most people would assume that if you are going to get a player of James Roberts’ standard nobody would be upset with it, but clearly Gagai is concerned,” Kent said. Dane Gagai scored a double in Origin I on the wing, but sees himself as a centre at club level.

Gagai is signed with the Rabbitohs until the end of the 2021 season and Kent couldn’t confirm what the reaction of the Rabbitohs has been to the news.

“I’m still coming to terms with it, but what we are trying to figure out is to what extent does Gagai feel aggrieved,” Kent said. “Whether he pushes the Rabbitohs for a solution to fix it, but I don’t know what the Rabbitohs and Wayne’s response is going to be. “Wayne could just say there is no chance you are leaving. Get happy and get on with it, but it is a story that is developing at Redfern.”

Damn we thought we had him

  • Wow…I will play Winger Internationally and Representatively but for club…nah, i’ll just quit…will be damn funny if the club he signs for drops him to reserves…REGRET

  • He’s ordinary anyway, unless we dye our jerseys Maroon, then he’s a superstar.

  • No point even discussing him. We are the WTs with no money to spend .

  • zac lomax would be so much better…

    next!

  • @Tcat Just saying “we are the Tigers” would work

  • Banned

He plays wing representatively but he doesn’t want to play wing for his club…huh?

  • Once again here is a player who is better than every single one of our back line players. Of course people dont want him at our club.

    9th!

  • Ohhh boo hoo I don’t get to play my favourite position.

Imagine getting paid 700K to play on the wing.

Some of these players, my gosh. He has been awful at the Rabbits as well their supporters will pack his bags for him.

  • @upthetigers False news same as DWZ all the garbage about he is leaving as he wants a fullback position this week at the Dogs playing center again False News,
Probably the wife wants back to Qld … happy wife happy life!

  • I still think Gagai could be a real good fullback personally …written off wayyyy to early

Like Valentine Holmes …give him time

Ballsy call …I’d pay him 600 k and tell him you smash it out of the park as a fullback we will upgrade you to a 900 k plus contract

He is a mile better than any of our current backs, but that’s really not much of a wrap. No chance he’ll come here though. You’re not going to leave a top 4 team to join a bottom feeder like us unless he gets a big bump on what he’s on now, and I can’t see us being in a position to offer him a ham sandwich let alone an upgrade.

PS - 9th this year would be a deadset miracle.

  • Wouldn’t say no to him.

Even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t get a chance to though, as we’ll be buckleys chance of him ever even considering us.

We could do shaved sandwich ham. (Strictly on home-brand white bread of course.)
But there’s no way we could provide some fancy maple honey mustard glazed variety. He’d have to go to the roosters for that and they’re good for centres atm…but then again, Latrell’s maybe a clean swap option with the cash difference to be made up with said ham.
