Rabbitohs and Maroons star Dane Gagai is reportedly seeking a move away from the Rabbitohs.
The Queensland winger is apparently unhappy with being seen as a winger at the club, after the signing of James Roberts.
“Dane Gagai is considering quitting Souths to go elsewhere in the NRL,” Paul Kent told NRL 360.
“Possibly it will be before the June 30 deadline, but possibly after for next season.
“It all stems around the James Roberts signing and he sees himself as a centre and clearly with Roberts coming to the club he has been designated as a specialist winger.” Wayne Bennett has made no secret of his desire to play Gagai on the wing after originally picking him outside Greg Inglis at the start of the season, with Braidon Burns preferred at left centre. Bennett then went and signed his former Broncos’ centre Roberts as a replacement for Inglis, while Burns struggled with injuries.
“I think most people would assume that if you are going to get a player of James Roberts’ standard nobody would be upset with it, but clearly Gagai is concerned,” Kent said. Dane Gagai scored a double in Origin I on the wing, but sees himself as a centre at club level.
Gagai is signed with the Rabbitohs until the end of the 2021 season and Kent couldn’t confirm what the reaction of the Rabbitohs has been to the news.
“I’m still coming to terms with it, but what we are trying to figure out is to what extent does Gagai feel aggrieved,” Kent said. “Whether he pushes the Rabbitohs for a solution to fix it, but I don’t know what the Rabbitohs and Wayne’s response is going to be. “Wayne could just say there is no chance you are leaving. Get happy and get on with it, but it is a story that is developing at Redfern.”
