Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire and prop Russell Packer are no longer speaking to each other,

Ivan and the Panthers must be pissing themselves. Torch on the belly and under pressure and we decide to implode and make ourselves a laughing stock.

Again.

And he was punished for that and served his sentence.

Not having a go at you, Paws, but that “done his time” argument only seems to get used when it suits. You don’t hear people say it about the pedophile who just got released and moved next door your family.

Anyways, let’s just agree: He’s a loose bit of gear. Always has been and there’s plenty of evidence to support it. We should have known the risk when we signed him.

@Masterton we got played- Saints offered 2 years, we should have offered 2 years- with a little bit more $$$ and maybe option in clubs favour for 3rd year.

What we shoulda done is dug our heels in with cleary and told him you signed them you coach them. You can leave when your contracts finished and we would have been no worse off. Now we have a premiership winning coach and a dud coaches roster.

Cleary leaving has uncovered the complete desperation and ineptitude of the club but also his ability to attract talent. If we as fans knew the contracts when they were done no one would have supported them. It also has highlighted Cleary was simply trying to tread water and boost his value as a coach not improve the Tigers for the long term. He had zero plans of seeing out his contract it defies logic. He gave inflated contracts to players that would back him in the locker room.

Madge is the best thing to happen to the Tigers since Sheens. No player will sign with us for a holiday or retirement benefits. Only motivated hard nosed players that want to improve will sign up. Look at Bellamy he is the closest coach to his style.

Madge will Burn and Churn this team and build for the long term. If players improve he will back them if they sink like Packer, ET, Reynolds, Mahe etc they will not be playing.

Tough few years ahead but it has to be done. No more big contracts and short term deals. Back the youth for the long term.

@TYGA
Yes, I agree.
I was throwing out a ‘make him pay’ type comment re cleary. Indeed if we had done what I suggested we’d be back in this position as soon as he left anyway. Expensive retribution for us.
At least now we are moving forward albeit painfully.

Retribution would be nice but best revenge is success. The damage he has done is on level with Jason Taylor. The other point I didn’t make was the farce he was bringing Nathan. There never was the cap room available and he knew it.

Looks like we will be stuck with Packer until the end of his contract.

It will be his last contract, no club NRL or EPL will touch him, especially if he spends the next 2 years in the Reggies.

interesting and disappointing if true, if Russell pulled his finger out and played like he did at the beginning of last year, maybe he wouldn’t be on the outer??

Until we “do a Souths” on him.

I’m all for tough coaches but eventually you step on enough toes the players revolt. Luckily for Tigers, right at this moment, we haven’t got any players good enough to be worried about them leaving.

typical attitude of someone who has sat in a few prison yards in his time…looking for the entitled handout…
If he was working hard and things still didn’t work out then fine, but it seems he is taking the high road and doesn’t realise how this looks for him if he wants further professional football employment…

In fairness, that is career suicide for Pascoe and the board to demand that. Cleary would have driven the place into the ground, the players would not have put in for him and ultimately the fans would riot.

Whilst agreeing with you, there is something there in NT Tiger’s post that has some merit. What can the NRL do when club coaches recruit players that suit them but then the coach leaves on bad terms soon after recruitment. The club is left in the lurch and the player/s and incoming coach are behind the eight ball from the start.

This is more than WT and has happened every so often in the past to other clubs. In some political scenarios the ministers / cabinet members resign and allow the Prime Minister the opportunity to be rid of people they dont want. Maybe this could work for NRL i.e the contract is somewhat in the responsible reign of the coach not just the club. Coach goes, the contracts are up for review and have a small window of the player / club being able to test the market.
