Home Ground situation needs to change

Unfortunately the MacArthur area just hasn’t taken to the Tigers. I can’t see how playing out of a better stadium there, in tandem with a soccer team (if it ever eventuates), will make more people turn up.
The honest truth is it’s a bloody long way for most supporters and not enough locals go and pay to support the team at the ground. The area is a manufactured “home”… the traditional one being Lidcombe.
There is no major corporate support and even the Leagues Club dumped us.
If the team relocated permanently to Campbelltown it would sound our death knell.
By all means support the juniors in the area, along with those in the Balmain catchment, but we will have to play in Sydney proper to survive.
I grew up dragging myself to Leichhardt Oval for every game. Unless a miracle happened (and it won’t) and the place was afforded a massive facelift then we need to be realistic and play out of one of the updated stadiums - and not BankWest.
One traditional game each at Campbelltown and Leichhardt, and none in the country unless we have to.

It is a chicken and egg scenario. Macarthur hasn’t taken to the tigers, but the tigers have not taken to Macarthur. Playing a couple of games out of a stadium in the area hardly constitutes a major investment.

There has been next to no investment in the juniors by wests, the only support comes from the leagues club. This is why half the junior clubs have connections with other NRL teams and the best juniors will never be seen in a wests jersey (saw Falou & Hayne mentioned, but add Inu, Hoffman, Hodkinson, Lafai, Pritchard, Paea brothers etc.).

The leagues club sold their share because they were being asked to financially support a business where they were unable to influence the direction. The majority shareholders were acting in their own self interest rather than acting in the bests interests of the wests tigers as a brand.

The area is a manufactured home for anyone older than 32. For those younger than that the magpies never played at Lidcombe in their lifetime. This is similar to wests v balmain debates. No-one under the age of 20 would have any memory of either of these teams playing, with their only experience being the wests tigers.

This is one of the problems with this club, it doesn’t have an identity or any tradition of its own. It is shackled to 2 clubs that no longer exist and trying to please both sets of historical fans which only results in it treading water.

@Tigerlily well written The NRL needs to provide significant Funding to country areas. My comment about our club taking a game to Tamworth is more to do with the many fine footballers our clubs have signed over the years. Time to give something back. If you think of it, young Jock Madden is just the latest of a long line of talent from the country.

Wests fund Group 6 , that’s a fair commitment fi a country league.

What do you mean by wests? Would that be the Wests sports council from the Campbelltown leagues club that has no involvement with the Wests Tigers RLC? From the website (https://www.westslc.com.au/wests-sports-council/😞
Group 6 Junior Rugby League – Operates and administers the Junior Rugby League competition in the Camden and Wollondilly LGA’s. Comprises 13 Clubs, 2,200 players. Oversees the pathways through the Country Rugby League Regional championships for Representative players. The Club provides meeting rooms and presentation venues for all Clubs within as well as funding towards insurance costs for all players

No involvement? Wests Campbelltown run western suburbs juniors dont they? So wests tigers have nothing to do with western suburbs juniors?

Limited involvement in Macarthur/Group 6 juniors. Majority of the support comes from Wests Campbelltown

  • No one has to look any further than the Magpies experience in the McArthur region all those yrs and they still could not get a supporter base ! Campbelltown is where NRL clubs go to die! . I know went to the first game at Orana pk and the last game played there what a tragedy .

  • @Snake mate and bloody thank you. Let’s leave it there because unfortunately there’s a lot of younger fans supporting this great club and it needs to strive to succeed for them !

Stop trying to please anybody who’s about to kick the bucket and to be fair, would’ve seen either west’s or Balmain have great wins at great venues - I personally don’t live far from BankWest but it is NOT what we needed it to be, it was however the best option for this yr.

We’ll never share with the Rorters or souff’s so that leaves Homebush, Lidcombe and concord all becoming our Sydney Identity and bloody staying that way for at least the NEXT 20 Years.

Couple games at Leichhardt as others have said and we are good to go… ANZ it will be.

  • @TieDye Don’t Souths play at ANZ?

  • @cochise said in Home Ground situation needs to change:

Yes they do… But the man has spoken

  • Wherever we wind up, we will want good coin to play there. I agree if the 6/6 LO and CSS arrangement doesn’t work and is not profitable then we must move away from that strategy to a full time single home ground.

It’s confusing. But I thought western suburbs supported group 6. Tamworth can be left for someone else.

  • @gallagher So Wests Campbelltown look after Group 6, Wests Tigers look after the Macartur and Ashfield look after Ashfield and Balmain? I uncertain on all of that so am just asking the question lol

  • @cochise The logic is Bankwest =Parra home ground no way …ANZ Souths and Dogs =home ground but that is ok ! I honestly just do not see the logic in this thinking in any way …

  • G’day @watersider : a very sensible and well-worded post bringing up some very interesting points. I really wish we had more quality posts such as yours ☺
