Doubt he’d be happy being only on 350k for the next two years when he’s worth double that. Club should look to upgrade him, despite the cap drama.

    Rubbish!

Matterson signed a contract for a certain amount of money. That’s it.

If you’ve been the best player all season I think an upgrade is deserved👍

@TigersBusDriver because they want to keep him…

Mate … he is SIGNED for next two years.
I really don’t see what we are getting our knicker in the knot for?
I have a gut-full of Managers, playing stupid games like this.

Looks like Matterson and his manager are predicting our cap space being freed up with the offloading of Matulino, Packer, etc and trying to get some extra cash. My guess is he won’t be leaving and will see an upgrade in his contract. Not sure how I feel about that tbh

I know how I feel. Give him the money. He deserves it. Would be nice if he extended his contract another one or two years as well.

Looks like this is the end of the panic felt by so many Wests Tigers supporters. Maguire should sit down with Matterson and quietly discuss the issues. An extension , captaincy and increase in salary would be well deserved and provide much better outcomes than that fool Cleary provided in his CAP dealings when he was coach.

I agree with this post, KEEP MATTERSON whatever it takes🤗

Great point mate…and for all those saying “Matterson signed for 350, bad luck”…it does NOT WORK LIKE THAT.
He came here as a piece…told he will play behind two kiwi book ends…told he will be one of a leadership group of 6.
A year on and he is THE MAN doing it all each week. 150 a week, ball playing, 70 mins plus…He is doing tons of off the field stuff also.
Any club with a brain would be proactive and have called him in and said “here is a 4 year deal for 600, tear that 350 up, you deserve the it for all the work he have asked you to do”. Let’s make you captain.
Press conference = star player signs on for four years. Positive off season. Get Matto to help recruiting now for 2010.
    But not us…

    No no no no no.

It does work like that. He was paid to come over and play first-grade football every week. There are no other guarantees and that is his job description.

You don’t get to sign a football contract and then start demanding certain outcomes - “oh I only play in the middle behind Kiwi forwards” or “if I do more than 600 tackles this year I expect overtime pay”.

You come, you perform and then maybe the club offers you more money as they realise your value. If you undervalue yourself and sign up, bad luck, and give your manager an uppercut whilst you are at it.

Or, if he wants guarantees, so be it, lets draw up a new contract where he only gets paid for wins. Or only gets paid if he makes over 150 m in a match. Then he can have matching guarantees about what type of role he’ll have at the club, unchanged despite injuries or changes of fortune/form.

You see any players signing contracts like that?

Mate, Lattrell Mitchell wants an upgrade. Ponga does also. So does every rep level player on a poor deal.

The Storm upgrade all theirs who make rep teams.

The bottom line is you do it AND extend them.

Matto has two years left at 350.

Give him four at 600 and we both win.

This is what successful clubs do.

Release him and show the rest of the NRL players we won’t do it / won’t reward a great season = we may as well give up. No one decent will come.

If you want to finish 15th, good luck.

You are kidding … then you complain about the club not having enough money in the cap when you have overpriced long term signed cattle in the yard trying to battle long term injuries.
You signed for what you think you may be worth and your managers should have bells and whistles in your contract which trigger an increase IF you reach a level that may deserve such an increase. Otherwise you can ask but the Club would be very silly to agree in a first year of the three year contract to double your salay.

  • Everyone saying we should just give him an upgrade so that we don’t lose him seems to forget one thing, we have no money available next year to offer him an upgrade!!

In saying that though I’m sure Madge has been watching games as much as we have and can see the importance of Matto and should he be able to clear some of our wood ducks then keeping Matto happy and offering him an upgrade would become a priority. Madge is trying to build a team/club around consistency and stability and what better way to do that than build a team around quality players like Matto which in turn helps you attract other quality players.

  • @tigerbalm For that we could dig up Steve McQueen. At least he could turn and chase.

  • Thankfully it doesn’t sound like a problem with the coach . Sort out the money and move on.

Not being able to upgrade a young star is not “kidding” mate, it is a legit issue and will have a flow on with every future young player we negotiate with.

Having all the deadwood we have is not Matterson’s fault, it is ours.

And, for the last time, all you blokes saying a “contract is a contract” etc…WE are trying to get FIVE PLAYERS out of their contracts. And we have a history of doing it when we want players out.

In simple terms, we as a club do NOT hold any moral ground at all.

The bottom line here is you negotiate like a smart club does. You say “listen, we have you for two years at 350…we are not going to change that to two times 600. But, we will change it to four years at 600. You get more, we get 2 extra years”. WIN/WIN.

  • @Telltails With the possible exception of marquee players, all players should be signed on options to increase IF they perform.

I know what i’m saying, and i’ve seen others saying too. You extend him for an extra 2 years, and upgrade him from 2021 onward. He can’t get any more next year. A token upgrade perhaps, but i think he’d see the value in signing better players for him to play with.

He extends his commitment to the club and he gets compensated accordingly. 2 years of matto at 350k is great value for us, and upgrading the final year of his existing deal is showing him the respect for what he’s done at the club and his subsequent increase in market value. If we don’t upgrade his final year he’d be more likely to want to entertain offers from other clubs next Nov.

A bit of give and take from both sides and we all come out better.

  • @tig_prmz no but we would try and move him on which to me is the equivalent

Agree 100% that $350k for two years is great value and that an increase/extension from 2021 is a great idea, was more pointing out that there’s been comments saying just give him extra money now which obviously we can’t do.

Like I also said I have no doubt Madge can see his value to the team long term and he will do whatever is necessary, within reason, to keep him here long term.

  • Brent Read is usually on the money. Makes Hooper’s allegation look like absolute crap. This Hooper is a real dog. Calls himself a Tigers supporter but can’t wait to put the boot in. Just makes stuff up. And the “unprofessional” comment is just about further sensationalising what is already an exaggerated post.

Couldn’t agree more. Just because he has a profile (albeit, a damaged one with his departure from politics) doesn’t make O’Farrell a good leader. On the other hand, Marina Go has a history of building successful entities through developing the leadership capacities of herself and others.

Say what you will about Marina, but O’Farrell was a State Premier. I don’t understand how anyone can just swipe this to the side. Marina’s projects are chicken feed compared to O’Farrell having to run for and maintain office (20 consecutive years), climb the party ranks to leader (leader for 7 years), then win elections (largest swing against an incumbent government since WWII) and manage State budgets. He wasn’t even defeated at an election, he was done on a bottle of wine.

People think that pollies must be idiots and just swing into office based on a smile and kissing babies. They may not be your “type” of person, but the long-serving ones are smart operators, not just connected, but knowing how to navigate the world of fragile egos and agenda, which is the NRL +++.

I’m not even saying this as a Barry O’Farrell fan - I’m a Labor voter typically and I don’t care if the bloke is chairman or not. Just people who dismiss State Premiers like they know nothing, same thing happens with Peter Beattie.

O’Farrell is President of Diabetes Australia and also CEO of Racing Australia. If he was a complete moron he wouldn’t have these posts and we would not have hired him.

I don’t care what O’Farrell has done as a politician - I don’t think he is stupid - I care about what he has done for the Wests Tigers as a Chairman of the Board.

As far as I can see - to this point, he has done nothing except stand around for a few ceremonies.

He maybe a lot cleverer than Marina Go, be a leader of a party, win elections etc. etc.

However he has done nothing - Marina is so far in front of him as a WT Chairperson he wouldn’t hit her with a cannon. FACT.
