Breaking a Contract

Using Ryan Materson as an example given he has requested a release with 2 years still to run on his CONTRACT could not the Tigers ask for compensation from either him or his suitors? They did it with Ivan Cleary so why not Materson? I am not suggesting compensation should apply to players who a club is shopping around only those who request a release. If a player or his suitor has to part with dollars then they might not be so keen to pull the plug!

This needed its own thread why?

@StuartS To offset losing Matto, we would want more than compensation, we lose a quality player for only $350k/$425k cap space. An extra $100k or even $200k cash wouldn’t help.
-
All things being equal, the club will certainly be seeking some kind of compensation for releasing one of our best players.
That could include money from another club or a player. It’s unlikely from the player himself.
Now and then, this does not happen though. Mainly when there’s pressure to release a player to stay under the salary cap.

Some good ideas, but unfortunately nothing will change under the boofhead running the game atm…hopefully vlandys will give the whole NRL an overhaul

Yes, and this has already been discussed a lot in the Matterson thread.
He won’t be going anywhere until we receive suitable compensation and agree to a release.
-
@TigerTiger I think it would help.
It means we go to the market with 500K and not 400k.
It also gives us leverage. For instance if the Titans are looking for Matto then we could talk Jai Arrow. Now we would have to throw in a lot for him but we can start saying “hey this is a contracted player, you want a replacement and you are loosing Arrow”.I don’t think Jai will come here unless we spend crazy coin. IMHO I would rather push for the Broncos forwards then Jai.

@crazycat Ok, I get you, I misunderstood. I thought the $100k or $200k talked about was money paid from one club to another outside of the cap, like a fine or profits or whatever. Yes definitely any increase in actual cap space would be good.
So we’re talking that $100k or $200k is like Matterson who was on our cap for $425k, gets swapped with Joe Bloggs on $625k, and the other team pays the $200k out of their cap, so we get Joe Bloggs and pay only $425k on our cap? Is that how you mean?
