NRL to speak to players flashing gang signs during during games, post-match interviews
By WWOS staff
5 hours agoThe NRL will speak to players and clubs about their links to gang culture after it was revealed rap gangs may be using unauthorised footage of footballers making symbols or gestures after scoring tries or during post-match interviews.
A number of high-profile stars including Josh Addo-Carr, Jack Wighton and Brian Toโo have made public gestures or have been photographed with rap groups with the images then often posted on social media without their knowledge.
When Addo-Carr made a symbol during a post-match interview last year, a social media account for โdrillโ rapper Hooligan Hefs re-posted it with the caption โLETS FKN TROT !! congrats brotherโ.
Addo-Carr denied he was making gang signs, saying it held a deeper meaning to him.
The Storm star during a game last year. (Nine)"I was born in Doonside and that is just to remind myself where I came from and has nothing to do with being gangs,โโ Addo-Carr said.
โIโm proud of where I come from but want to make it clear that no one should get involved in gangs.โ
Over the past two seasons police have noticed high-profile players have seemingly innocently been making hand symbols used by Sydneyโs feuding street gangs.
"The players have no idea that they are used by these (gang) members on their social media accounts,โโ a NSW police officer said.
There is nothing in this world more embarrassing and cringeworthy than grown adults making hand gestures or doing those pitiful funky handshakes.

Kids can get away with it. People with adult bodies doing it is just very very wrong.

Season derailed again?
The Broncos have been rocked by a pre-season scandal after NSW Origin star Payne Haas was locked up by police following an alleged brawl on the Gold Coast.
Haas was detained by police at Tweed Heads in northern NSW following the incident on Saturday night in the border area.
NSW Police confirmed a 21-year-old man was arrested and will appear in court next month.
โAbout 10pm Saturday 16th January, officers from Tweed-Byron Police District arrested a 21-year-old man on Coral Street at Tweed Heads after the man allegedly became abusive towards police,โ the statement read.
โHe was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with offensive language and intimidate police.
โHe is due to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on Tuesday the 2nd of February.โ
The Broncos and NRL have been contacted for comment.
It is not the first time Haas has been involved in controversy.
He was fined $20,000 and suspended for the opening four games of the 2019 NRL season for failing to comply with an NRL Integrity Unit investigation.
Haas refused to properly answer questions from investigators about off-field incidents involving violence and his family following complaints from the public.
Later that year, Haas became unwittingly involved in teammate David Fifitaโs Bali arrest.
Haas and Fifita were holidaying together on the Indonesian island when the latter was detained for three days.
Haas was interviewed by the NRL again over the incident, but was cleared of any wrongdoing. Fifita was not suspended due to a lack of information being available.
Despite his age, Haas is one of the Broncosโ best players and has been crowned the clubโs player-of-the-year for the past two seasons.
He has already played four State of Origin games for the Blues and two Test matches for Australia in 2019.
Haas will become a father for the first time in the coming months and last week spoke about wanting to help the Broncos fight back from last yearโs wooden spoon season.
He has also been dealing with the death of his older brother Chace last year, who Haas idolised.
