Is Mark Geyer a total grub?

Ok I am a NSW fan. I go for them and hey being a Wests Tigers fan it has trained me to barrack for the underdog.

The local Gym was showing an old State of origin match. I couldn’t pick which one, it had Allan Langer, Mal Maninga, Wally, etc. I think Laurie Daily was 5/8 and you could tell it was from the 89-91 era.

Man Mark Geyer was just awful. He would start scrapping over nothing regularly, everyone else was playing ball, he just wanted to throw punches. He was tackling a winger or Center and king hit the guy hard. Then the biff came and he was separated behind a few in the NSW pack. It was one of the dirtiest moves I have seen in Rugby league ever. The guy he hit had his arms pinned in a tackle. If this is the spirit of Origin count me out, it was a coward punch if I ever saw one.
I only know it was Geyer because the Jersey said Geyer. I know his brother played too, but I am pretty sure it’s the mmm Mark.

Over this guy entirely.

I work with his best mate,
Some of his stories are crazy. Different breed those Old School forwards

Pretty Sure Geyer was told to go out there and be the thug and put QLD off their game. He did what he was told, coped a suspension and I don’t think he played for the blues again. He mentioned it a couple of times on the grill team and how he thought he got shafted by the coaches.

He’s one of those league personalities who says things for affect. Tries to be hard hitting and controversial. Him, Matt Johns, Blocker, Tallis, all seem to make it their mission to be known as “straight shooters”. When you try to present yourself that way, you usually come off as a knob.

Seems like a brainless bastard every time he opens his mouth.

I wouldn’t take anything he says too serious.

He played the game the way he was instructed to

Drinks at my old local. In his earlier days he was a lunatic, so says most of the older blokes who drank there, but now he’s pretty easy going and a really nice bloke to have a chat with. His radio persona is probably a bit different but he’s an old Mt. Druitt boy so it’s no surprise he’s a bit rough around the edges.

Exactly. See him regularly around the place. Never forgotten where he has come from and if he says something, it’s because he honestly believes it. Has taken ownership of a lot of the crap stuff he did and thats good enough for me.

Blocker Roach was a guest speaker at a golf day I went to a while back with Peter Tunks. He spoke of a story where he was buddied up with a young Mark Geyer went they went on a tour of Britain in 1990. They went out one night after the Brits had beaten us, they had flagged a cab to take them wherever they were headed, and the cabbie had given them a hard time about their defeat and was chanting “one-nil, one-nil one-nil one-niilllll.” Apparently Geyer gave the cabbie good hard smack and he and Blocker started chanting “one-all, one-all one-all one-allllllll.”

Australia won the next two games.

I don’t mind the bloke he’s turned his life around from all reports. It was a rule when he played for Umina Bunnies that when he started to stutter run to the nearest bomb shelter.

Crazycat was that the game when Geyer rattled Wally’s cage? He was following instructions. Anyway, what happens on the field in the heat of battle stays out there.

Haha ha offended by old school Origin… pfft

Can remember an Under 18 state game where Andrew Gee made an absolute mess of him in an all in brawl

Geyer had half his ear torn off and Gee had beaten the bejesus out of him

He wasn’t half as tough as his persona made out

toughness has nothing to do with proficiency. Plenty of people are too tough for their own good. Will vs skill…

He played for the Balmain (Sydney) Tigers and was rubbish except for one game. The week before (from my dodgy memory) Gould dropped him from the City rep team and Geyer blew up. Next game was at Leichhardt and Geyer went berserk and basically won the game by himself
