Wests Tigers Jersey Flegg side will have their final hit-out ahead of the 2020 season proper this Friday when they face the North Sydney Bears at Macquarie University Sports Field.

Kickoff for the match is at 7:00pm AEDT as Wayne Lambkin’s side look to build on last week’s strong trial win over Penrith and lay a strong platform for the year ahead.

With the club’s extended NRL and Canterbury Cup sides both in action in trial matches over the weekend, a number of new faces will take the field for Wests Tigers’ young guns this week alongside several of the regular players.

Impressive young prop Etuale Lui will again start up front with last year’s Player of the Year Felix Smith to play his first game of the new campaign off the bench.

I like Rizk - heaps of talent. Looking forward to watching them this year.

Without cursing them, this year’s Flegg team looks one of the best we’ve had in recent years. It’s going to be exciting to watch them progress. The backs look electric, quick and in the forwards Smith, Mavonni, Sykes & Jancovic are guns.

Competition for spots will be fierce all year.

A lot will depend on Stevanovic’s ability to consistently step up to the mark. He was a bit hot and cold last year.

That and how many get called up to CC throughout the year.

Looks like two new additions to the wider Jersey Flegg squad in Craig McKenzie (ex Roosters) and Eli Morgan (ex Burleigh/Titans).

Thanks. I just researched these two and Eli Morgan played in the same Qld U16s team as Ryan Garner, Interestingly, an article advised that Craig McKenzie is the cousin of Greg Inglis.

I really like the “new” recruitment strategy.

Anyone know how we went last night?

We won.

Not sure what the score was, however missed the start but saw most of the game , the Tigers were the only scorers. It was a forwards dominated game, and The Tiger’s forwards were making alot of ground up the middle. They certainly have a big mobile pack.

Wests tigers won 32-10

Good to see both sides getting wins. Kei with 4 tries across both trials is encouraging. Also good that Jock is controlling the game and making key conversions in CC.

Be interesting to see how both squads lineup in round one given all the talent to share across the grades.

From the WT site: https://www.weststigers.com.au/news/2020/03/02/canterbury-cup-jersey-flegg-end-trials-on-winning-note/

It was a winning weekend all up for Wests Tigers with the club’s Jersey Flegg and Canterbury Cup sides joining the NRL side in recording wins to close out the pre-season campaign.

After a good win over the Penrith Panthers last weekend, a new-look Jersey Flegg side made it three wins from three in the pre-season campaign with a strong performance over the North Sydney Bears on Friday night.

William Kei was a standout for the side in the 30-10 win, bagging three tries, but the way Wayne Lambkin’s side finished the match will have no doubt impressed the coach most — finding their rhythm more and more as the game continued.

Felix Smith showed positive good signs in his first game back from injury, while Ben Stevanovic wrapped up a good pre-season for him with some nice touches.

Not selected last week with Jake Simpkin dropping back, Rua Ngati’s return at hooker was another positive sign for the club with the experienced number nine showing his craft around the ruck to stake his claim for Round 1 selection.

On Saturday, it was the club’s Canterbury Cup side who got the job done over the Panthers with a come-from-behind 18-14 win at Panthers Stadium.

Fielding a young side with a number of Jersey Flegg-eligible players, the Magpies posted two early first half tries through Development Players Jock Madden and Zac Cini, before then home side hit back to take a 14-8 lead in to the break.

A sustained period of pressure throughout the second half proved the difference for the visitors, however, with Kei and Brendan O’Hagan — who had spent time with the NRL squad in the pre-season — both crossing for second half tries.

Madden’s strong conversions late on saw the Magpies re-take the lead by four points while his good kicking game ensured there would be no late resurgence from the Panthers to preserve victory for Western Suburbs.

Both sides will now enjoy a well-deserved weekend off, before kicking off the 2020 season on Sunday, March 15 against St. George-Illawarra. Wests Tigers Jersey Flegg side will run out at Ziems Park at 1:00pm while the Canterbury Cup boys will feature at WIN Stadium at 3:45pm as a curtain-raiser to the NRL game.

WTs have picked up McKenzie and Muir from the Roosters. There has been good recruitment at the junior level for two years which is a significant improvement. Well done and I hope our retention can match this standard.
