Speculation so far. It may happen, it may not. I’ll wait for the official announcement. Only then will I’ll rejoice.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg’s time in the top job could come to an end “as early as early as this week” due to a dispute with clubs over money.

The Sydney Morning Herald claims its a matter of when not if Greenberg will be shown the door because he shortchanged the clubs after ARLC commissioner Peter V’Landys negotiated the terms of a rescue package to keep the clubs afloat through the first few months of the coronavirus crisis.

The 16 NRL teams were told they would receive $1.21m in April to help them survive but they were paid $23,000 less each.

While it’s not a huge amount, the clubs need every penny they can get right now.

Some club chiefs got in touch with V’Landys about the problem and it’s said the commissioner was “ropeable” especially since the NRL went against his directive to give the clubs the full amount. He made sure they got paid the remaining owed the next day.

Club chiefs also expressed concern over being shorted over payments to the distressed club fund.

Since the new broadcast cycle was implemented at the start of 2018, the clubs had put away $187,500 every year into an account which they could access in case financial hardship hit the game.

When the clubs asked for their money back they were once again short-changed more than $30,000 each.

It took another phone call to V’Landys for them to be paid the $31,250 still owing.

If V’landys hadn’t of stepped in to make things right, the clubs would have missed out on a $1.6 million combined, a huge figure considering the uncertainty surrounding the game.

The report claims the fact that V’Landys took the side of the clubs than the NRL is a sure sign Greenberg is on the outs.

Up to you mate how you read it…but I would say he is gone …he has upset the camp way to far this time…funnily enough its over money…who would have guessed…?

Rumour, also read a rumour from Moley that they are considering playing Origin before the rest of the season. If so, bugger watching that. Origin is meant to be the pinnacle of the national comp, not to be played instead of.

I really do hope if Toddy gets the flick then he drags a whole stinking bunch of others down and out the door with him.

If Turdberg does go it just confirms the old motto “Never trust a bald headed man”.

Our Mr Pascoe would be interested to hear of this irony.

Inclined to agree there. I hope he drags down everyone else that was complicit in the godawful administration of the game.

So sad for the shonky donkey

Greenburg led to a $400m ‘explosion’ that’s coming back to haunt Greenberg

There’s lots happening in the NRL. Todd Greenberg’s future is in serious doubt, while there is talk that the game will introduce an innovative blood test to ensure players are safe to play.

Here are all the latest updates.

The NRL is under fire for wasting money. But they’re not alone, and cumulatively the clubs have splashed $400m on backroom staff in recent years.

That’s what Phil Rothfield has revealed in The Daily Telegraph on Monday, with teams spending big on coaches, executive bosses, data analysts, extra physios, before, yes you guessed it, sacking them all.

As Rothfield told the Big Sports Breakfast: “it’s going to lead to the biggest cost explosion in the game.”

And the finger of blame for the expansion of all those departments is being pointed at one man, and it goes back to his time at the Bulldogs.

Rothfield added: “Poor old Todd Greenberg is getting blamed for it again. It’s on coaching staff and high performance staff, in 2010 the average spend on a coaching staff was $1.6m, last year it got as high as $8 or $9m.

“Todd in 2012, they [the clubs] say is responsible for this explosion he paid Des Hasler $1m, the first coach to have a salary like that.

“He gave Des an open cheque book, he hired a psychologist, dietitians, three physios, a club doctor, four assistant coaches and it blew out with Canterbury having to sack them all. I think that’s the first area of cost-cutting.”
