Wests Tigers forward Luke Garner says he’s keen to get more involved after producing arguably his best performance of the season last weekend against the North Queensland Cowboys.

Recalled to the side in Round 6 having watched from the sidelines the week prior, Garner responded with a strong effort on the right edge outside Josh Reynolds — running for over 100 metres for the first time this year while also adding 25 tackles.

While pleased to be back in the side and playing 80 minutes, the 24-year-old said there was still plenty in his game to be improved on going forward.

“I was happy with how I went on the weekend but I know that I need to do better this weekend,” Garner admitted.

"Defensively I still need to be better.

"I missed a few tackles on the weekend so I’ll practice that throughout the week at training to really tighten up with my wrestle a bit.

"It’s what I’ve wanted to do all year is put performances together… [so] I need to get a bit more involved in the game too. I need to try and get a bit more ball and have a few more carries.

“I’ve been talking to Josh about that and it’s what we’re going to do.”

Having played the first four games of the year running outside of either Luke Brooks on the left edge or Benji Marshall on the right, Garner said he was enjoying the new challenges and opportunities of playing outside Reynolds — a player whose energy was “infectious” for the playing group every single day, according to Garner.

“Benji and I grew a bit of a combination early but I think Josh and I are really growing one now too,” Garner said of the team change.

"We’re pretty lucky to have so much depth at this club.

"You always have to be pushing up beside Josh because you don’t know what can happen. Something might open up for me and I think all the boys are learning that.

"It’s very infectious to see their energy.

It makes me happy and it puts a smile on my face every day, so I definitely look forward to seeing them when I come to training."

👍

Is it wise to talk about improving your wrestle …nothing to see here refs …lol

don’t just say it…do it, then tell us!

👍

Really encouraging outlook from Garner.
Exactly what us Wests Tigers fans need to hear and see more of right now.

Hopefully we do more seeing than hearing though mate.

I’m sure i’m in the minority here but I don’t really like these fluff pieces.

So true.
“Fluff pieces” come out and inform us of what?
If any club wants their fans to feel good, what about honest up-to-date player info, reasons for minutes during a game, player attitudes & KPIs, all squad member updates (ie including those not in the top 17 - what’s happeneing with them etc) and real info that has relevance.
No club provides fans the real inside info.

I doubt you are. They’re ridiculous, but clubs have to always present themselves in an upbeat, positive light. Real supporters can see through the intention of these articles. Nothing of substance.

Yeah it’s the same template every week just with a different player. Total waste of time.

yea

i think they are better off just doing the interviews and leave it at that, Highlighting stuff like this isnt necessary imo

I think it is a good thing for different players being interviewed and get their opinion of how things are going at training and how Madge is working with the squad…

I did notice that Garner mentioned how good it was to work with JR and he is learning from him…
Maybe Madge does have a high regard for Josh and how he is positively influencing and helping the younger guys…
good reading…keep them coming…

Because it’s on a “Need to know” basis.

They feel, you don’t “Need to know.”
