Defence & Effort where has it gone?

Im not one to start threads but i just dont understand how this has turned around so quickly

List the games since covid restart

Sharks - Not much memory
Titans - Pretty poor effort Benji dropped
Raiders - In it all game, outclassed at the end
Cowboys - Had their measure all game, slackened off in second half
Bulldogs - ez pz
Panthers - Like the raiders in it right until the end, just unlucky
Rabbitohs - They had alot of ball on our line, we just compounded error by error but still defend to 18 points
Broncos - ez
Eels - Once again matched them pretty well, but outclassed in the end
Warriors - Leading at halfway but defence slightly poor. Warriors were improving though. Madge big spray at half time. End up getting steam rolled
Knights - didnt show up
Bulldogs - scrapped home, huge defensive holes in middle
Roosters - 15 minutes of effort

So since the titans game we looked like a serious side that could compete, yes we didnt have the class and weren’t winning a premiership but the effort was there.

Were has it gone? My suspicion is that madge spray when we were leading has upset some princesses in the changeroom.

Be good to hear other opinions how we’ve gone from ultra competitive to wet paper bags in the space of a week.

Maguire owns this has been here for 2 seasons the last month has been a disaster no use blaming the players they don’t even look like there coached !

if you polish a turd it still is a turd. Just have to face it we aren’t a good team. Lacking in so many aspects of the game and players are not really NRL standard.

Yeah good questions, fair questions. Not sure the club has the answers either…It’s frustrating to the point where we just expect it to happen - and that is what’s really disappointing.

The club definately doesn’t have the answers.

😂
Tonight looked like it was there first ever hit out

I have felt for a long, long time that we overstate our “good efforts”. We play a month of solid footy and out they all come on media day saying new culture / new attitude / new era…but it never lasts.

And all teams…ALL teams…have a solid month. Dogs took Parra all the way. Saints have had a solid past month.

NRL is a long, tough, season…and we simply do not have the ticker for it. Have not had it for a long time.

Gareth Ellis was our last really high level performer over a whole season. A bloke who you knew what you would get every week / really high level footy.

Cronulla and Manly both on the backend of large scores this weekend. The game lends itself to blowouts if you make errors and can’t maintain possession - especially against quality squads. We have a lot of average players who try hard and a few that are taking up a bulk of our salary cap that offer not much.

But they cracked tonight first shot down. No tiredness, no pressure…first shot down.

We had 80 % of the ball in the sec half first 20…as soon as the Rorters got it they went and scored.

Absolutely no built up pressure. Nothing.

So, we can’t use fatigue or possession as excuses IMO.

Yes - because we are not a match for the Roosters! Do you think the Roosters would have beaten us tonight with Russell Packer Josh Reynolds and Moses Mybe as their highest earning players. Not in a million years and people want to blame Maguire

We have to persist with Madge. We’ve changed coaches four times since Sheens. Nothing changed. Time we backed the coach and let him clean out.

The players have clocked off 3 weeks ago…next 6 games will only be worse

Yes, he’s not the problem. But I fear the board won’t have the balls to back him long term

Line-speed is the key to any competitive team. We’ve had it in patches, but too few and far between. We had it in the games where we were competitive, and that’s the reason we did compete. Even tonight, early in the 2nd half when we started to have a go, put 2 tries on, then conceded a try from the ensuing 7 tackle set. Our line speed dropped off again after that. Then we’re back to square 1. Take the defensive hustle away, and we’re just not good enough.

Um , 3 of thier 4 first half tries were directly related to bad defence between the 2nd rower (Garner) and 6(Benji).
Seriously Benji is a shot duck . His defence is horrendous , and he was doing that run across field thing he used to do years ago.
Burton or even Flanagan should be on our to do list .
