WESTS TIGERS five-eighth Benji Marshall felt sorry for himself for 30 minutes after two late errors blotted his performance on Saturday night - before the smile of Lleyton Giles, the terminally ill 5-year-old the players have adopted as their mascot, shook him out of his despair.

‘‘I sat here for half an hour and [was] a bit sad, and then I looked around and looked at little Lleyton, and he’s still walking around smiling,’’ Marshall said of the youngster, who led the side out for the preliminary final.

‘‘When you look at that, none of this is really equivalent to what he’s going through.’’

Lleyton, who went to Andrew Fifita’s hairdresser to have his hair dyed orange for the occasion, visited the Tigers’ hotel in Homebush on match eve to hand Marshall a framed montage of photos of the pair, with the words, ‘‘My Hero Benji’’.

‘‘I had to fight back a few tears,’’ Marshall said. ‘‘He went out of his way to deliver it to the hotel last night. They only came in for five minutes, gave it to me and then left. To see that, I had him in the back of my mind [on Saturday night]. Sometimes things don’t go your way.’’

That was certainly true late in the fixture. Marshall kicked out on the full, which led to the Dragons marching upfield allowing five-eighth Jamie Soward to kick the crucial field goal, while he also lost possession when the Tigers were scrambling for a late victory.

‘‘There’s no point dwelling on it now,’’ he said. ''They were the better team and they got through.

''There’s so many things you can look back over and say ‘I could have done this, I could have done that.’

‘‘It was separated by a field goal. But the boys really stood up.’’
