Independent consultant, Brian Canavan, formally presented the findings from his extensive review of New South Wales Rugby League State of Origin to the Board of the New South Wales Rugby League today.
An extensive analysis was conducted by way of a review of literature relating to sport models, assembly and assessment of relevant statistical information, and consultation with stakeholders and sport officials.
Mr Canavan interviewed over 100 people and took in the opinions of key stakeholders, experienced sports administrators and numerous sporting academies lead to the formation of the report that was handed down today.
Outcomes from the findings of the process were presented to the Directors of the Board with the following recommendations tabled:
      1. The NSWRL establishes a High Performance Unit which includes the key responsibility areas of the NSWRL Blues State of Origin department and high performance programs department.

      2. The NSWRL appoints a full-time NSW Blues State of Origin Head Coach on a contractual basis who manages the NSW Blues Department and is actively involved in the Elite Player Development Department.

      3. The NSWRL appoints a High Performance Programs Manager on a contractual basis to oversee the NSWRL State of Origin Blues and High Performance Junior Development Program.

      4. The NSWRL establishes a long term association with the New South Wales Institute of Sport on a contractual basis which works at all levels in the High Performance program.

      5. The NSWRL establishes a NSW Blues High Performance Unit Head Office which acts as the central location for the NSW Blues and High Performance programs.

      6. The NSWRL Blues adopt the following:

      • The appointment of a Blues Chief Adviser to oversee Blues player selections and squad preparations with further consideration of an additional adviser
      • All staff to be appointed with a view to longer term tenure
      • “In camp” staffing to be expanded to include assistants in the areas of team management, media, and sponsor servicing
      • A single camp base to be determined and utilised
      • Enhancement of commercial aspects via increased support for branding, merchandise program and sponsorship servicing

      7. The NSWRL Blues “Legends” to be incorporated into a structured leadership and mentoring program and the appointment of a “Legends” coordinator to work closely the Blues Head Coach, Chief Adviser, media and marketing departments enabling a more unified and expansive approach. The appointment is to be approved by the NSWRL.

      8. A formal review of the 2010 High Performance Model and programs to be conducted at end 2011 to appraise all key performance indicators.

NSWRL General Manager, Geoff Carr noted the Board was suitably impressed by Mr Canavans’ report.
“The Board fully supports all aspects of the report in principle and will look at the immediate implementation of the recommendations subject to sourcing the necessary budget,” Mr Carr said.
“The extensive research which Brian (Canavan) has undertaken to come up with a best practice model is exceptional and has set the platform for short term success and sustainable competitive advantage.”

Interesting Read. To bad there was nothing in there about sacking the current selectors & coaching staff 😃

          Well according to this

          http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/blueprint-for-success-neutral-coach-axe-selectors-20101006-167wd.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The current selectors will be dumped….which would be a good start and they want a coach who isn’t coaching any of the clubs

Sacking the selectors is a great move. A full time coach is as well.
Pick the correct team and your half way there……look forward to a close series for once.

I could have come up with that stuff. Bottom line is that Qld has simply had a stronger squad than us over the past 5 years. We need decent halves instead of the 235 different combinations used since 2005.

It’s simple……ban the use of the term “Built for origin.”

Stryker is right, picking the right side is only halfway there. They’ve got to show up on the night as well.

Can u believe how sad NSW has become that we appoint a QLD’er to tell us the obvious? Honestly, who are the people running the show?

If I was a blues supporter I’d ask for my money back, how come Gould didn’t say that?? Isn’t Bozo Fulton a selector, fat chance sacking him.
