Wayne Bennett really loves a challenge. If he transform that log into a decent player there will be no more debate on the game’s greatest coach.
-
Must be high fives going all round at Sharks HQ with that news. No doubt Cronulla will back it up by signing another wash-up or never-was…
-
And I will also say that it is slanderous to Betty. She’d show more ticker on the paddock than that oaf!

Yeah true. Moved a lot faster and hit harder too.

How can the Saints fit him under their cap? Stuart thought he was worth about $200,000 a year.
-
They still have longer term concerns over the injuries Weyman is carrying and getting Hunt back to full fitness. As I understand it Slothbo also took a pay cut for a chance under the Bennet structure
-
Sharks must still be paying a huge portion of his contract - there is no way the Dragons could take up that sort of slack or expect the bloke to take half his contracted pay!
They did win on the player swap though - Smith v Cuthbo is a no contest!

That’s how much Cronulla paid him. True value is more like $20,000. He’s in no position to be asking for anything above minimum wage based on his time at the Sharks.
-
He still has year remaining on that contract and any shortfall will need to be made up by the Sharks!
Like Payten at the Tigers in 2004 when the Raiders and Roosters were both paying portions that made up the majority of his contract value!

I doubt the Dragons are dumb enough to pay anything other than a token amount of the contract. Cronulla were stupid enough to pay massive overs so they’ll be stuck with the majority of his pay packet.

I agree Yoss - I assume the Sharks are retaining a liability of around $140,000 for a player who will be at a rival club!
The only benefit to them is it no longer counts against their salary cap - but this is a club who can hardly afford to spend to the cap limit as it is - and they still have no CEO (as a cost-saving measure)!!
No wonder they are financially up the proverbial creek!

Well exactly. And with dumb decisions like this and Karl Falinga it’s not hard to see why. For years they’ve held out for this pipedream that they will be able make a motza on the land they own down there. It’s only very recently that they’ve worked out that maybe they should consider plan B before they’re all bussed off to Adelaide.

They don’t have a recruitment officer either do they? That’s part of the coaches role there is it not, judging by the clangers in recruitment that were attributed to Stuart…

Not sure about that. The recruitment decisions do seem to have improved dramatically in recent times coinciding with Ricky’s departure. At the end of the day most NRL recruitment would involve the coaches (apart from Parramatta apparently). As I understand it the recruitment officer is more like a scout for younger players.
-
They don’t have a full-time talent scout/recruitment officer as we do in McDonnell, the Roosters O’Sullivan etc!
They have used their U/20s coach Joey Grima in the scouting role in the past two years - with recruitment overseen by the head coach!
This has been another cost-saving measure by the club - who cannot work out where to best spend their limited funds!
