      Independent Commission Thread

A few questions I need clarified

Will the Independent Commission officially be referenced to as the ARL??

WIll the NRL logo be changed??

Will anyone in the employ of the current NRL and News be unable from being a commissioner??

Will the commissioners simple replace the NRL partnership board as it currently exists with all the other organisations staying and functioning the same (ie CRL, NSWRL and QRL).

If so I think that we are still very top heavy…

my fear is that we replace one lot of stooges for another lot exactly the same.i think the commission if run right is great for the game but as your questions suggest aswell as my thoughts lets hope it will work.

I don’t think any of the existing NRL/News/ARL board members can run for the commission. Gallop will be the only one left if I am not mistaken?

I hope that’s the case anyway. I don’t want self interested parties like Nick Politis & Colin Love with their nose at the trough again.

I think the good thing about the commission is that 8 commissioners have to be proven smart business people with minimal club allegiances. It also ends any conflict of interest that having a major media organization owning 50% of the game could have caused.

We get rid of the self-interested dead wood that could perpetuate themselves in the administration to smart board members voted in by club CEO’s, who’s decisions will be steered by the fans.

With your question about the commissioners spartan, I think that no one currently employed by the NRL can be a commissioner. If news Ltd severs ties with the Broncos, Storm etc and has no direct ownership, then say Rupert could be a board member. But that obviously won’t be the case at the moment.

Gallop will be the CEO of the NRL and will report to the Board, but I don’t think he will be a board member.

NSWRL and QRL will still exist, but they will no longer have voting rights. Thats why the QRL have been demanding set funding for juniors from the NRL to ensure that the commission can’t take away their funding.

Not sure about the logo or the name. I assume it will stay the NRL with the same logo.

It probably hasn’t gone far enough yet, but I like that they are taking baby steps. Once the commission gets power, they can streamline it further.

It’s how the NRL should have been run for a long time. The fans will effectively own the game.

The IC will be responsible for the running of Rugby League as a Product.
NRL is a Brand within that Product and will remain pretty much the same.
State of Origin is also a Brand within that Product.
Income sourced from the game will be controlled by the IC and distributed accordingly. (previously income was distributed after its stakeholders decided how much they wanted to payout to clubs and organisations etc)

Dont be fooled by the hype, the IC will still be “jobs for the boys” for its first part, and hopefully will see a changing face over time to become truely Independant (or maybe corrupt 😆 )

It’ll definitely be interesting times, in that my questions are……
Salary cap? Expanded or gotten rid of? Worked on or left as is?
                Expansion. Where, when and who?
Who will be a part of this commission? Ex Mac Bankers looking for new jobs? Joe Schmo who loves the game?
How will the existing clubs handle a new changing of the guard? Will the new “charter” so to speak be easily transparent for the average punter? I for one would certainly like to read it.

It will be interesting to see if it does end up as ‘jobs for the boys’ because there will be a tonne of media scrutiny about it and not sure if they could get away with it.

Call me an optimist, but I think they will steer clear of anyone like that. Each club has 1 vote so I don’t think mateship or club loyalties can play a large role.

They haven’t formed it yet so expansion hasn’t been discussed, but I heard a figure of $400k being banded about for a salary cap increase.

Commissioners are voted in the club CEO’s. Each receive 1 vote. They haven’t announced anyone yet. But will be proven business people with a passion for league. No Joe Schmo’s, ex mac bankers a possibility (Tricky Trindall worked there!). Basically people with intelligence, experience and passion for league. e.g. Katie Page, Harvey Norman Boss was touted as a strong possibility but she is a current NRL board member so she was ruled out.

A constitution is currently being drawn up. Probably be in legal speak but I’m sure they will do a summary.

Quayle is still in line to lead the commission

FORMER ARL supremo John Quayle remains in contention to be the inaugural chairman of the newly formed independent commission, as clubs are prepared to sack commissioners if they are not satisfied with the quality of candidates appointed by News Ltd and the ARL.

In the wake of the Herald’s revelation yesterday that Quayle was not on a list of 128 candidates for the eight commissioner posts drawn up by a consultancy firm, it has emerged that the ARL and QRL are yet to forward the names of nominees, meaning the number of candidates to be considered is set to grow even larger.

However, the Herald has been told that unless those appointed are better qualified than the eight candidates selected by club representatives from a lengthy identification and interview process, a vote will be called to remove the commissioners.

Advertisement: Story continues below ‘‘If the clubs aren’t happy with any of the commissioners then all it will take is 14 votes on the day after the commission is formed to remove them,’’ a club official said.

Under the constitution of the new body, clubs can not appoint commissioners but have the ability to remove them with 14 of the 26 votes afforded to the 16 NRL clubs, the NSWRL and QRL and the eight commissioners required to effect such change.

A list of eight preferred commissioners - which included Quayle, former Billabong, Qantas, Brambles and NSW TAB boss Gary Pemberton and Stanford University professor George Foster, who specialises in sports business management - has already been devised by the clubs. It is understood Quayle would be the chairman.

Despite not being on the extensive list provided to News Ltd and the ARL by international recruitment consultancy firm Spencer Stuart, Quayle can still be nominated when a sub-committee comprising of News Ltd chief operating officer Peter Macourt, ARL chairman John Chalk, QRL director Terry Mackenroth and South Sydney chairman Nicholas Pappas, representing the clubs, reviews the suggested candidates.

The candidates put forward by Spencer Stuart’s head of board services and executive practices John Mumm, an Australian Rugby Union director, have been categorised into various areas of expertise such as: finance and accounting; legal affairs; sporting; government and community relations; business; media and communications; marketing and sponsorship; and, capital management and investment banking.

Mumm has also suggested the board have a geographical balance, with candidates from NSW, Queensland, Victoria and New Zealand, as well as female representation and cultural diversity. It is recommended that those appointed have a genuine empathy and interest in rugby league.

Despite fears that the independent commission may not be in place before the start of the season on March 12, a News Ltd spokesman told the Herald yesterday that the media company expected the eight commissioners to be appointed before the end of February.

‘‘News Ltd is committed to ending its involvement in the running of the game and has been working to that effect with the ARL for the past 15 months,’’ the spokesman said.

‘‘This is happening several years earlier than anticipated and the timing and manner of News Ltd’s exit has never been firmly set down but News has opted to walk away in the best interests of the game, as has the ARL.’’

ARL chief executive Geoff Carr also said he was confident the independent commission would be operating before the start of the season. However, Carr said he was still waiting to receive the list of 128 candidates drawn up by Mumm.

It is understood that the list was compiled from nominations forwarded to Mumm and from Spencer Stuart’s data base of business executives.

How Ironic!!! The guy who started the Super League War is the Number One Candidate for the Commission??! :deadhorse:
