Lui’s half a chance but defence will be the key
David Riccio From: The Sunday Telegraph December 19, 2010 12:00AMWESTS Tigers officials are banking on Robert Lui partnering superstar Benji Marshall in the halves next season.
“I think Robert Lui and also Timmy Moltzen will ultimately battle it out for that position and I think with the quality of those two guys we’re in pretty good hands,” Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphries told The Sunday Telegraph.
However, the reality is that Lui’s future - both on and off the field - will be determined in a courtroom tomorrow where he plans to defend a string of charges.
The talented 21-year-old has been charged with nine offences against his pregnant partner, Taleah Rae Backo, which include two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, three of common assault, one of malicious damage, one of choking with intent to commit an indictable offence, one of detaining for advantage and one of aggravated robbery.
Lui, who was stood down by the club after being charged, went to Campsie police station in the early hours of September 26, after the Tigers lost their preliminary final 13-12 to St George Illawarra.
He successfully applied for a variation to his bail conditions recently so that he can contact Taleah Rae Backo, who is five months pregnant with their child.
Privately, Wests Tigers officials remains confident the promising halfback will be acquitted.
The NRL is also monitoring the situation.
The Wests Tigers have resisted adding to their roster for next season in the belief Lui will be available for selection.
Lui played 17 NRL games this year after making his top-grade debut in 2009.
Despite his off-field dramas, Lui was also recently named in Queensland’s emerging talent squad.

Moltzen clearly offers more utility value than Lui however with both players in-form, I’d still argue Moltzen has an edge over Lui when it comes to the halfback position. Interesting times ahead over the next couple of months…
-
id say moltzen is more consistent but luis form in the back third of the season was great
-
I’m hoping Lui’s off field drama gets wrapped up quickly, that kid has a lot of talent and deserves the spot at 7. As a club we gotta make sure we dont send him off to another club where he becomes a superstar.
-
Doubt it will be over quick, hes pleading not guilty so that will see this drag on well into next year I reckon

Big Day today

@Balmain Tiger:

I dont think 7 games is enough to call him “consistent” over a guy who lead us to the Finals for the first time in 5 years… But then again, we are also undefeated with Lawrence at 6, so if that is grounds for consistency, we better get rid of Benji too
If anything, Moltzen’s 2010 form was way below his best, and I hope he takes his time re-building strength in BOTH knees, as he will be just as important to our 2011 season as Robert Lui!
-
I hope we will still be having these discussions at days end and the court case goes well.
Anyone know what time we may start hearing about the results???
Ps - Sorry Rob L for My/Our prying into your personal issues…
-
I think the main factor in the Lui vs Moltzen argument for the #7 position actually has nothing to do with either of them, it is all about Tim Sheens!!
Sheens has made it clear that he sees Lui as our future in the 7 jersey and that he believes Moltz is better suited to fullback. I think that will be how they line up next year and regardless whether we think Moltz is the better 7 is of no consequence.
In saying that about Moltz at fullback it still leaves a question about Mckinnon and where he will then fill in. Does anybody else think that he was bought as a backup for Moltz and to also assist in his development in the 1 jersey??

waiting to hear how lui went today, does anyone know anything yet?
