God damn… Souths are looking dangerous over the next couple of years.

      http://www.foxsports.com.au/league/nrl-premiership/south-sydney-sign-emerging-english-star-george-burgess-the-brother-of-sam-for-two-nrl-seasons/story-fn2mcuj6-1225977345762" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

South Sydney have signed promising English star George Burgess, the brother of Sam, for two NRL seasons.

Burgess, a prop standing 194cm and weighing 120kg, is yet to taste first grade in the English Super League and will start his career in Australia with the Rabbitohs’ Toyota Cup squad.

Rabbitohs chief executive Shane Richardson said: "The Burgess brothers are all talented footballers and we’re delighted to have two of the boys playing for the Rabbitohs over the next two years.

“George is a great prospect and a real project for our Club. We’ll work with him over the next two years and during that time we’re aiming to develop him into an NRL footballer in the red and green.”

Burgess was excited about joining his older brother Sam at the club.

“I can’t wait to make the move and get started at the Rabbitohs,” Burgess said.

"Sam has been raving about the Rabbitohs and living in Sydney all year, so I’m looking forward to coming out and training and playing in Australia.

"I’m grateful to Bradford for the opportunities they’ve given me over the past few years, and also the release to come to Australia and play with the Rabbitohs.

“I’m very excited about pulling on the red and green jersey and getting started on my career at Souths.”

The news comes less than a week after the Rabbitohs lured their big fish, Greg Inglis, to the club on a three year deal.

Someone please explain to me HOW? They have just shed Champion to sign Inglis and they have one of the top under 20 squads in the league. I can only assume that they will be releasing some players prior to 2012.

Toyota Cup has a separate salary cap. I’m assuming they aren’t claiming him in the top 25 of the NRL squad.

That said, that cap is only $250k for the top 20 in Toyota Cup. I have no idea how they signed him within that cap! He must be on $50k or lower…

As hammertine explained - he is there through the u/20s contract regime and has zero value under their top 25 salary cap!!

This was however known about two months ago - but Souths have kept it silent because of the Inglis saga.

Good to see Russell supporting the local juniors so well (i.e. Champion)!

And while the venerable Mr Crowe was so keen on preventing the local grass roots Redfern people from access to pokies in a the yet-to-be re-opened leagues club (for their own good apparently) - he has now embraced StarCity (the biggest RSL Cl;ub in Australia) as their major sponsor!!

Crowe & Richardson are fricking Hyporcrites of the highest order!!!

Just like his older bro is on a base salary of under $200K - meanwhile their Mum is eating foie gras - truffles - and Iberian ham while drinking Dom Perignon from her new mansion on the outskirts of Bradford!!!

                    haha. nice.

Apparently Luke’s contract extension is a bit ‘iffy’ now…. and he’s the only decent player in their 1,6,7 & 9.

I definitely think they are going to have to shed some of their forwards next year.

Hammertime, would u be saying this if we signed him? Good on Souths for doing it. They relied on the locals for years and got them no where… now they are looking out side the square and now its paying off.

Definitely not having a go at them. Great signing! Just saying they might have to shed players from their forward pack, because they will want to keep both Luke and the Burgess brothers.

The only negativity I mentioned was that their 1, 6 & 7 are still only average players.

dont forget he prob wont be ready for 1st grade for at least two years… by then Crocker, Asotasi and some other older players will be shown the door… Asatosi alone is prob taking up 450k per year

True, I don’t know what their situation is to be honest. I assumed Inglis was heavily back ended and might compensate for the above 2. We will see.
