EXCLUSIVE
Bulldogs front-rower Ryan Tandy has been arrested by police for his alleged role in a betting sting on Canterbury’s round-24 NRL match against North Queensland last year.
Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Racing and Casino Investigation Unit are finalising their investigation into suspicious betting activity on the game, an inquiry that has this month used the powers of the NSW Crime Commission.
Advertisement: Story continues below It is understood Tandy was arrested today.
His role in the match has been a centre of focus since betting agencies reported suspicious punting trends on the usually novelty option of the Cowboys to open the scoring with a penalty goal.
The alleged sting was ultimately unsuccessful after the Cowboys declined a chance to kick an easy goal after two minutes, and instead scored a try.
Tandy, who was penalised in front of the posts for lying on Cowboys half Grant Rovelli, strongly denied giving it away intentionally in an interview with the Herald published on August 28.

It was almost inevitable I feel, this arrest, conviction is a completely different kettle of fish though.
Will be interesting to read the charge sheet and under what jurisdiction the matter will be bought
-
The SCC rarely make arrests without a water-tight case smeg!
Someone has clearly rolled-over on him!
-
It’s hard to make convictions in fixing unless someone talks. Look at the Pakistan cricket team who have been getting away with it for years.
-
It will be interesting to see.
I don’t think the evidence of one individual rolling on him will be enough to convict. Than it comes down to one word against another in a case of conspiracy to commit a crime which never occured. Than the predicating factor of what they had over the witness who rolled
I have no doubt the SCC thinks their case is strong but these are muddy waters where no outcome is
-
The charge would relate to conspiracy to defraud (the crime being in the attempt - not the success or otherwise of said fraud) - as such I agree that they’d need more than one co-conspirator - which given the extensive investigation is highly likely!
Ayoub must be changing his trousers…
-
Apparantly a giving false evidence charge Red.
That would scream of can’t get anything else on him. It would also see an end to his career if guilty

This. But I cannot see how they can reach a conviction unless someone opens their trap. It’s highly obvious that silly buggers were afoot, but in reality if everyone keeps their mouth shut it’s all circumstancial, even though it was a unusually high amount of cash laid on the option and the player arrested doesn’t mind a punt himself.
I wonder if the investigators got to Brad Murray and he rolled on Tandy?

The reason people would talk is because the SCC offers immunity against prosecution CB!
Saving their own back-sides…. and there used to be honour among thieves!

I just noted that myself smeg - but that makes it clear that others have provided contradictory evidence that speaks to the suspected conspiracy that was the subject of the investigation!
There will be alot more to come IMO!

The incentive is there for Murray to roll if he was central to the sting. 20 years old, not yet even in FG, it will be all over before it starts for him.
However, unless they don’t publish the details of the case I don’t see how he would be able to continue on in League, as I don’t think any club would be stupid enough to touch a player involved in match fixing and the like.

Murray is still facing de-registration by the NRL for betting on games - the SCC cannot immunise him from that possibility!

This from the Tele:
BULLDOGS star Ryan Tandy has been arrested by police today over the betting sting an an NRL game last year.
A police spokesman told The Daily Telegraph that Tandy was in custody and charges were expected to be made later today.
Tandy has twice appeared before the crime commission this week in relation to the betting plunge in the Bulldogs-Cowboys last year.
Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenbery said he was shocked by the development and was not informed by the police.

Bulldogs CEO Todd > Greenbery > said he was shocked by the development and was not informed by the police.
Once again, class proof reading from the Terrorgraph, almost as professional as their journalism…
-
kind of obvious he was involved. He knocked on an easy take which handed over possession and then gave away the penalty. Hard to prove conclusively though.
