This weeks team is all about Why gallant wont be resigned.

I reckon this weeks team selection is motivated to justify to us fans why the Tigers will not offer Shannon Gallant a contract for next year.

Blind Freddy can see that since we have moved Benji to 6, Moltzen to 7 and Gallant to 1 we have won 5 in a row and the team has shown attacking flair and fluency not seen since Morris was brought to the club.
I reckon the Tigers have a huge question mark over Gallants defensive capabilities. Would’ve Gallant stopped a runaway Minichello like Moltzen did last Sunday?..probably not given his defensive lapses in the last line the previous two games. Gallant is a brilliant player, positionally plays the #1 really well, he has blinding speed, backsup very well and is fearless in taking bombs…but he is suspect in the last line of defence and Moltzen is a bit better than him in this area.

Moltzen, in my view has had a stellar year, he is equally effective at 1 as he is at 7…IF and this is the big question… Lui steps up and plays well for the rest of this year, then he will probably have the inside running to partner Benji in the halves in 2010, which means Moltzen will be our fullback, also given our signings for 2010 in Mitch Brown etc.,. therefore Gallant will be on the outter. This is my view…what does everyone else think? ❓

Moltzen is a good attacking fullback in the respect he can create something at the line.

But he is a very incomplete fullback. Positionally he is questionable as he is with directing a defensive line and running support lines through the ruck

Alexaki, disagree with your comments regarding Gallant is suspect in the last line of defence. I and I’m sure others have watched the kid play a lot of junior and lower grade football and like a former Wests fullback, managed to play above and beyond his weight and size week in week out. The amount of times he has single handedly saved games on his last line defence alone is remarkable. I’ve lost count. One in particular this season playing Reserve Grade for Western Suburbs.

He managed to save the game with what was supposed to be a try that would win the game for the Central Coast Storm, yet enter Gallant, who defied the odds to somehow stop the Storm player from ground the ball. One of the gutsiest and astonishing try savers I have ever witnessed on a football field. His defence at Leichhardt against the Cowboys was second to none, when confronted with a Nth QLD line break only to shut the raid down with some body on the line defence.

To label as a weak last line defender or compare his defensive capabilities with Moltzen on the back of the great Minichiello try saver is harsh and unfair. Both players can defend and defend well. Both have different traits, qualities and strengths to their respective games when lining up as Fullback.

I think depth is a wonderful thing. Gallant is the best specialist and fullback option Wests Tigers have had in their ranks all season. It’s disappointing that it took so long for the Coaching staff to give the kid a go. I believe and would like to think that Gallant does have a future at Wests and is retained for 2010 and beyond. Injuries and form are apart of the game and will always effect the general make up of a squad throughout various stages of a season. It is imperative to have the right personnel, the right players, in the right positions when needed.

Competition in a squad is healthy and breeds a competitive nature within a team environment. No player should have a mortgage on a position. If Moltzen finishes the year of in the No.1 and Gallant is re-signed, then let the two custodian’s fight it out for the opportunity to be the player to pull on the No.1 in 2010 for Wests Tigers.

I think you are right to assume this although i feel that Gallant has done enough to deserve a new contract.
I am not sold on Molzten at FB as he was in the halves while playing as a junior and I feel that either centre or havles is where he plays his best footy.

Lui is an emerging talent and I feel that if he plays well on Sunday and over the next few weeks then Gallant may be off loaded.
Personally I would not have signed Blake Lazarus after 2 seasons being written off through injury. Gallant has shown better form over the past couple of seasons and deserves a top 25 contract.
Gallant, i feel, provides a better balance to our side. If we can just get a another big forward to provide more go forward, get Rhino to run better lines and produce a ball playing lock, then we have the right balance to the squad.

Gobbs My point regarding Gallant being sus at the last line of defence was based on the last two weeks games…You have seen him play alot more than me and I take your comments on face value. Don’t get me wrong…I am a huge Gallant fan and love the way he plays…I just don’t think the Tigers want him next year…If I were the CEO I would definately offer him a good contract for 2010 and 2011 and let him fight for the FB role…

The Tigers are entering a period where they have numerous options in the halves and at fullback, and as fans, they are not going to please us all with the selections each week. This much we have to accept. There’s quite a bit of competition there so if anyone is unfortunate enough to be injured, then someone else that the club has good wraps on, is going to get a run. Things won’t be made any easier next season when Taumata joins the club and Lazarus makes his return from injury.

We have players in the top tier for a few seasons that havent even been used, and gallant is treated like this by the club.
He really should tell them to shove it.

@Tiger Si:

looks like he may have an offer from the Tigers at last.

Very good news about MM re-signing or about to anyway but a bit disapointed as it looks like we are done looking for more rrecruits.A few more players could and should be shown the door

I’m glad for MM…I hope he recovers before the finals a plays a huge role at the club this year and next…I still think we should let go a few more players from the current roster…payne, halatau to name two

Release: Payne, Trimarchi, Halatau, Hanbury, Galea

Promote: Davis, Mataka, Akeripa, Stolk & Gower.

Good news on the probability that Gallant is going to be resigned…

I told you all this weeks ago.

Whats the surprise?

Insert apologies here.

Happy to see gallant re-sign but not happy about the call to close ranks on purchasing new players.
Everyone knows that Payne needs to be off load, Galea needs to be re-signed and a decent prop needs to be bought.
Laurie looks like he is not cut out for 1st grade, Shrnieck is a toiler at best and Fifita and Woods are about 12-18 months away from playing 1st grade.
Blind Fredy can see that we need another prop to balance the squad

So who was our marquee signing? 😕

Good to see Gallant being offered a new contract though.
