PRINCE KEEP TO KEEP COROWA SHIELD

The Gold Coast Titans and Wests Tigers will battle it out for the annual Larry Corowa Shield when the two sides clash at Skilled Park on Saturday night. The Larry Corowa Shield was introduced last year in honour of the Murwillumbah born Corowa, who played for both the Balmain Tigers and the Gold Coast Seagulls during his distinguished rugby league career.
The Titans won the inaugural Larry Corowa Shield when the two sides met in a pre-season trial match at Skilled Park in 2008 and the club will be looking to retain bragging rights this season.
Although initially designed as a pre-season fixture, the two sides have agreed to play for the Shield each time the Titans host the Wests Tigers at Skilled Park during the regular competition rounds.
Titans co-captain Scott Prince said the Larry Corowa Shield added an extra element to the clash between the Titans and his former club, who he won a premiership with in 2005.“Obviously Larry has played with Balmain and the Seagulls and is a legend of the game,’’ said Prince.
“It’s a prestigious reward for us to have a shield named after Larry.
“It’s up for grabs on Saturday. We’ve got it in our little trophy room so hopefully we can keep it there.’’
Corowa said he was proud to have the Shield named in his honour and confessed that he would be leaning towards a Titans victory at Skilled Park on Saturday night.
“I’m privileged to have the Shield named after me,’’ said Corowa.
“It started off last year and to be part of something between both teams is very good.
“I’ve got a soft spot for the Tigers but I was born and bred on the Tweed so I sort of lean towards the Titans.’’

No offence to Larry but I really don’t think anyone outside the PR departments gives a rats about the Larry Corowa Shield.
I was too young to remember him at Balmain but I remember when Corowa came out of retirement to play for the Giants/Seagulls/Gladiators/Chargers. He got the best reception I can ever remember an opposition player getting at Leichhardt although I think we (that is Balmain) probably won by 40 or so that day.

Well I am old enough to remember the black flash and he was an exciting player to watch. I was at Henson Park the day he scored 4 tries - he was a sight to behold.
-
HAHA SAW A BIT ON THE NEWS, THE PIC OF HIM ON THE SHIELD, AND THE BLOKE HOLDING IT TODAY BEAR VERY LITTLE RESEMBLANCE
-
didnt we beat them last round at skilled last year? so why would they have the shield

Me too mate he was a great quick player I even had a beer with him on that terrible day back in 1989 after the GF
he was gutted like we all were lol. -
If he played today the support he would get would ensure he was “bigger than Ben Hur”. Great natural talent….hampered by lack of understanding of the requirements of professional sport.
Loved the bloke when he was on song.
Send big Daine on to reseurrect the emotion. -

I’m guessing the idea and or concept was given the go ahead last year and we actually started playing for it this year.
Besides I’m partial to the Titans.
-
We beat them twice last year Skilled and At LO its ours.
-
I guess the Corowa Shield is vital when your wife keeps your balls in her trophy cabinet.
Hope you get hit by a car. Yeeeeeeah Braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
-
thanks chilbury….he was good!
-
they can keep the corowa shield, i’d prefer the two points.

He was easily the fastest player in his era and proved it at Leichhardt Oval in a night-time mid-week competition where all the teams put their fastest men to the test. It was a pleasure to watch him run away to a flank from head on defenders which gave them more time to tackle him and then he would put on the after burners….see ya. He came back to pre-season training one year and was about three stone overweight. That was the start of the decline of Larry Corowa MBE as a footballer. I still have his record “The Black Flash” somwhere.
