Bit of a random question I know, but I was wondering whether someone could help me out. The question is: could Gareth Ellis play for New South Wales? I know Neville Costigan got selected for Queensland despite being Fijian and I was wondering if there was a residency qualifying period? (117)

Highly doubt it simply because if there was such a loop hole, QLD would have exploited that several years ago.

You need to be eligible to play for Australia to qualify for State of Origin. Hence why Benji can’t play for Queensland…

I think it has something to do with the period leading into the World Cup. If Gareth, or Benji, in the 18 or so months leading to the next world cup declared they were now eligible for Australia, then they could be picked after that world cup. They couldn’t play for their own country for that period, of course. This is how Brad Thorn (Qld, Australia, NZ, All Blacks) could do it a couple of times.
I did hear that the qualifying was in the period before, and I think it was 18 months or something.
I could be nowhere near right, just a vague recollection in my head.
PS: He’d have to change clubs too. Maybe a stint at Manly or Easts would help I’m sure

What are you trying to say Chris
Are you trying to say we bent the rules to suit us
Whatever happened to the rule of having Qld refs for NSW games and vice versa
You blokes down south just need to accept it
You don’t have the players or the Qld spirit
Be prepared to lose a few more series yet I reckon -

Be prepared to lose a few more series yet I reckonlol… I’m no where near as confident as you Happy. I cant see us winning next year without Darren Lockyer running the team. I’d go as far to say we may lose 1-2 series before Thurston/Cronk learn to do this…
Either way, I’m certain Gareth Ellis flew via Cairns on his first trip to Australia, so I’ll claim him as a Queenslander!!!

Yeah I’m with you Watto he saw a picture of the Great Barrier Reef before the Coathanger so he is a Qlder
Where is Livermore and the late great Ron MacAuliffe to raise a stink -
he is prob more of QLDer than some of the others you have picked in recent times!
Ill never know how Falou qualified as a Qlder! On Izzy, did he play either HM or SG Ball for Wests?? I know he played in the Campbelltown junio district, remember we went out to watch him play before schoolboys carnival hoping to get the jump on the field, after about 2 minutes we realised he was out of our price range!

That’s all right they just want to play for the champion state that’s all
Don’t worry all you Mexicans out there I’m sure you’ll win …… eventually -
Sorry to say but this thread is stupid!
-
Folau was at Westfield Sports High before moving to Logan… I think he was only young, like 13/14 so he possibly missed playing HM or SG?!

Sorry to say but this thread is stupid!
Any thread that leads us to talking about Qld’s dominance of Origin over the last 6 years can’t be stupid
But yes Ellis will never play for NSW and I hope he never wants to either
It would cheapen the value of Test football and could start the beginning of the end for Test football if we allow it to happen which we would be a great shame -
Before NSW does that, how about we punt the selectors first!
-
Folau had a mate who lived in q.l.d & thats how he qualified.
