GROAT AND MILLER MAKE JUNIOR KANGAROOS SIDE
By Wayne Cousins
5/10/2011 12:21:44 PMWests Tigers players Matt Groat and Jacob Miller have today been selected in the ARL Junior Kangaroos side to play in Newcastle on Sunday, October 16.
The Junior Kangaroos will play the New Zealand Junior Kiwis in Newcastle in the preliminary game to the Australia V New Zealand Test Match at Ausgrid Stadium, Newcastle.
The selection of Groat and Miller in the 18 man squad caps off a fine season with both making their NRL debuts after starting the season in the U20s.
Groat played 10 NRL matches after making his debut against the Dragons at WIN Jubilee Oval in round 12, establishing himself as a young prop with plenty of raw potential.
Miller played 4 NRL matches after making his debut against former club Sydney Roosters at the SFS in round 4.
The talented playmaker was one of the major driving forces in Wests Tigers making the U20s finals. Miller will be pushing hard for the first grade half-back position next season.

Should be a good experience for them, well done.

Congratulations to Jacob Miller and Matt Groat for being selected in the Junior Kangaroos. Well done.
I think Miller might now be considered to be capable of playing first grade next year. We all know that Groat certainly is.
-
Hopefully Miller will get some good game time throughout the series. When he returns some of our questions over whether he is ready or not will be answered. I believe he will be.

I certainly think there’s reasons for Miller to be considered ready to play first grade, but I’m not sure how selection in the Junior Kangaroos proves that.
Plenty of players that have played in the Junior Kangaroos that haven’t kicked on in first grade.

I did not say that his selection “proved” anything. Read what I said. “capable of playing first grade” is a lot different than “his selection proves that”.

You said that Miller might now be considered capable of playing first grade. As if this selection, now warrants his consideration. I just didn’t see what the link was between being selected in the Junior Kangaroos and being considered capable of first grade. One’s a junior representative side and the others a professional all ages outfit.
There’s plenty of reasons Miller should be considered for first grade, but I’m not sure Junior Kangaroo selection really adds much to that case. It’s a wonderful honour, but it reflects his performance as a junior star, rather than his suitability for first grade.

Interesting that only 9 nrl sides are represented in that squad. Shows that some clubs have a lot more depth than others. Proud to say tigers r one of the clubs with up and coming talent

Well I am guessing that it is better to be selected to play for Australia than not be selected. I am guessing that you have to be able to play a bit to be considered. It would be interesting to see, over that past couple of years, how many players who played for Aust. went on to play first grade.
