I dunno if anyone read this in the telegraph today or has made a post about it already but it says Todd Payten will be coaching the 20s next year. Congratulations to the big hombre, hope he makes a fist of it. It will be interesting to see how he goes.
-
Yeh he is i even read it on RLW last week go todd payten

Would that mean Grant Jones will be moving up to an Assistants role with Sheensie?

Strongly suspect this is the case. He sat on the sidelines with the headphones on alongside Sheens a lot this year.

I see that as a good move by the Tigers and for Jones
Jones is potentially in the future a NRL coach in my opinion -
As well as assisting Sheens with the NRL squad which he has been doing part time anyhow.
Grant will also be involved in player development and recruitment.Grant has a teaching background good communication skills and has played the game at 1st grade level.
I am glad they relise their is a problem in the recruitment side of things and have appointed a genuine honest bloke with a football background and with the ability to communicate and understand player needs.
-
dont rate jones at all,he had the chance to pull the 20s together this year and failed big time, time to go grant.
-
so we should have 2 semi good assistants next year in jones and georgallis

I rate Grant Jones as a coach - it’s a lot harder when you’re an NYC coach because you can’t exactly build a team over a few seasons like you can in first grade. You’re pretty much dealing with half a new team every year.
In saying that, he’s produced some fine first graders.
Really looking forward to seeing how Payten goes. He’s definitely got coach written all over him and glad he’s staying with the club after retirement.
-
Surely Payten is not the 20,s coach…has no expierance in this position at all .Not happy about this needs a couple of seasons learning the craft. This is going to be a disaster unfortunatly the club has to stop this giving things away for there benifit ie the captaincy for a contract! Early retirement for an important position with no expieriance madness.
-
I agree with you Snake, is this appointment for real?
I am sure that Todd has all the requirements to make a great coach, but to be given the under 20’s in your first year of retirement seems like a massive gamble to me. It is hard enough to get the kids consistent over a long season but to then put in a inexperienced coach? It places a lot of [ressure on Todd too - if we come last then does that mean he can’t coach?
I want him in the coaching staff but head coach of the 20’s seems a massive risk to me. However, if Tigersrule4life is posting it then I am satisfied that the mail is accurate!

After 13 or so years in FG I’m sure he has picked up a few good tips from the coaches he has played under.
-
And he has played under some decent coaches. Sheens twice, Meninga, Elliot and Stuart. Give the bloke a chance i’m sure he’ll do just fine.
-
I see your point guys, but just because you played under good coaches doesn’t mean you can coach. Look at Fittler, Lamb, Langmack but to name a few. He might be a great coach- but I just think to give him control of the under 20’s in his first year out is a lot of pressure.
