GALLOWAY WANTS TO BE ‘THE ENFORCER’
      By Wayne Cousins
      26/10/2011 10:08:06 AM
Keith Galloway wore the sky blue of NSW and the green and gold of Australia this year. Now he wants to step it up a level and be ‘the enforcer’ of the Wests Tigers pack.

Galloway enjoyed his finest season in 2011 since making his NRL debut for Cronulla in 2003 but says there is still plenty of room for improvement next season.

“You can always play better as a player but it was definitely my most consistent year. I was pretty blessed in terms of no real serious injuries,’’ Galloway said.

“It is definitely something I want to build on. I want to get bigger and better for next year.

“The loss of experienced props Todd Payten and Bryce Gibbs means I have to be more aggressive, make more dominant tackles and more metres.

“There are always things you can work on as a player. You should never be comfortable and happy as to how you are going.”

Galloway acknowledged the role Payten and Gibbs played in helping to develop him his own game.

“Todd has been a wealth of experience for me,’’ Galloway said.

“I always looked at the way Todd conducted himself and his knowledge of the game. I just tried to draw off that and he helped me immensely in that department.

“I learnt so much from Bryce in terms of coming off the line in defence. He used to always shout at you if you were not pulling your weight. It was a pleasure to play with them.”

Go Suace. Hopefully he has a big 2012.

The additional experience he is getting with the Kangaroos and the help from Blair should make 2012 a big year for Keithy. If he has a big year, this will make 2012 a big year for the Tigers.

That’s the one thing that worries me is what Sauce alluded to
Who is now going to be the leader when it comes to our defensive line speed
We saw how much it affected us against the Warriors when the Warriors were running amok in the second half and there was no Bryce helping to control the middle of the ruck

My mouth is actually watering at the thought of Keithy tackling and defending like Gibbs and adding another 30-40 metres to his stats. He would be unrivaled as the best forward in the game.

                    🙏

Blair is as good if not better at defending as Gibbs. Bryce will be missed, but Blair will easily take up his role.

Defensive line speed and defence are two completely different fruits
                          Both are good defenders true
But defensive line speed wise Bryce is one of the best in the NRL
We get off our line so much more quickly and effectively with Bryce compared to without Bryce
Blair strength is winning the wrestle and controlling the speed of the ruck

                              I feel better now!!!

The other way of looking at this guys is :
Blair averaged approximately 25 tackles a game
In an average NRL game there are 260-290 tackles made
So Blair can only be effective about 8-10% of the time with winning the ruck and slowing the play the ball down

Gibbs spends approximately 50 minutes on the field
Gibbs has approximately 60% control of our defensive line speed
Good defensive line speed can control speed of the ruck ,metres made etc
So who is the more effective defender ??

Not turning this into a Blair v Gibbs situation Blair will be a fantastic buy for the club with his all round game

But defensively Gibbs wins hands down and defence has always been our weak point

I think you’ll find that with Blair slowing down the play the ball and his technique rubbing off on other players, line peed will also improve as players will have more time to get back and the line will be much more organised. If Keith can step up to half of Bryce’s production and takes up that leader role, we will have no problems. If our defense is that reliable on Gibbs then that is a weakness and the role needs to be spread out. I am sure that Sheens has a plan worked out.
