Wests Tigers winger Beau Ryan will welcome new rugby union convert John Grant with open arms but has already vowed not to give up his position without a fight.
Grant, the nephew of former Balmain Tigers winger James Grant, will take his first small steps as a rugby league player when 2012 pre-season training begins next month.
A prolific tryscorer for Shute Shield rugby premiers Eastwood, Grant is a real speed machine, having beaten the likes of Jarryd Hayne, Greg Inglis, Josh Morris and Ben Barba in the Gatorade Bolt sprint race at Homebush.
The arrival of Grant and Parramatta’s Joel Reddy means Ryan, Lote Tuqiri and Matt Utai will be vying for the wing positions next season. Grant and Reddy can also play full-back and centre.
“It is always good to have competition for your spot because it makes everyone play better,’’ Ryan said.
“Beau Ryan’s worst enemy is Beau Ryan. I use to beat myself up about who is coming to the Club and when Lote or Matt Utai were returning from injury but not anymore.
“I only worry about what I have to do and the bombs I’ve got to catch and the tries I have got to score. That’s when I play my best.
“I will support John Grant when he comes in. It is the same with Matt Utai. I welcome the challenge.
“Right wing is where I want to stay and want to play. If people want to come and try and get it off me, then bring it on.”

So matt utai is with us next year
-
Train hard all summer and play with the same attitude you did this year and last Beau and no one in the squad will take your jumper.

Talking in the third person. Priceless.

I find the best constructive criticism I can get is from myself
Beau seems to know his limitations and knows what works for him
Keep up the late season 2011 form and you will be right Beau
Stop rubbing your head -
I guess that answers the question about Utai - glad to see him back again!
And no mention of Mitch Brown…
-
People can doubt his talent at times, but you can never doubt his heart or passion!
Stick with us Beau, you are part of a great generation of players at Tigers. Bring on 2012!

I think he was talking in the past Helmesy
How it used to worry him -
Beau knows how to play right wing!…loved his form at the back end of 2011 season!!!

Utai is good value in terms of depth, but I’d be buggered if I’d use him on the wing or centres next season. Just too slow and risky in defence. He’d be handy off the bench as a utility but Reddy and even Grant would be better wing options as they’ve got height, size and speed going for them.
-
Surely this year Utai is just going to be in case we have injuries like last year…. I don’t think they were expecting to play Utai as many games as they did last year TBH.

Could have a good year in the State Cup.

For me Utai would be a last resort, behind Reddy, Grant, Brown and even Humble could play wing. If those 4 pick up freak injuries at the same time then i’d be giving Utai a call. He was great for us this year, but i don’t think his barnstorming runs make up for his defensive lapses, poor reads and difficulties under the highball.
