Apparently Monday will see the worlds 7 Billionth citizen born.
The population has jumped by 4 bill in 50 years and if any of you have ever been to China or India you’ll know how this has happened. With the worlds resources being stretched far more than ever in human history, it will be intersting to see if this growth keeps up. Seems very unsustainable to me.

was lucky enough to visit China in 1999. enjoyed it alot, but was great to return to australia.
as for the population, I do believe ,it will only be a matter of time, withing the next century, before vast areas, such as Nullabor plains, become industrial/urban areas. yes I know there is not much there, but companies will invest, and use solar panel technology/wind generators to become partially self sufficient energy wise.

If we can’t find a way to slow down our population growth I see some very hard times ahead for our children and childrens children
Food and power shortages ,global warming getting worse and water issues
Countries will view Australia in the future as a possible place of relocation and I doubt it will come peacefully

Anyone that’s actually been to China or India would realise that 7 Billion was passed a long time ago. I know its only a gimmick to put a date on it, but there is no way next week will see in 7 Billion people!! i think the figure would have to be closer to 8 or above as we look upon next week.
No doubt the one child policy has helped to slow down China’s huge population and its estimated to have prevented 500-800,000,000 births in the last 30 years but its also succeeded to increase the birth rate of “black children”. Black Children in China is a term given to children born ‘off the grid’ so to speak, i.e. Children that are mostly born in rural areas to parents with more than 1 child already. The parents do not register the child at birth due to the inability to pay the fines required to have more then 2 children in rural areas. This essentially means the child can not posses a National ID card and is therefore forced to live within the village away from the authorities eyes and away from the National census that gets conducted (very poorly) every so often, thus these people are “off the grid”. As to how many of these babies/people there are today? nobody knows, certainly not the Chinese government.
I live and work in China and have a Chinese girlfriend. Within her family alone i know of 5 of these people….imagine that multiplied out by the amount of official people in China…China’s population is already nearing 2 billion, but the officials are touting 1.34billion.
As for India, Jesus! Nobody can tell me that country/government has any idea how many people are living within its boundaries (official ‘Indian’ boundaries). It must go something like this “anybody care to have a guess and throw a number on a piece of paper?” that must be how they get their official population figures. India summed up in 3 words - Chaos - Dirty - People.
And than there are other countries that do not give official population readings or are so outdated to place a date on next week as ‘the week to bring in the 7 Billionth global citizen’ is just pure mockery. Infact, when the UN puts together stats like this on countries they mostly use “estimates” rather than official census results. Nobody really has any idea how many people there are in Asia/Africa/South-Central America.
But any excuse for a party i guess, next week is as good as any.

Yeah good point mate. I’ve been to India twice and it has fully blown my mind both times. Your 3 words totally sum up that country. Obviously we’re not saying that the people are dirty, more so the cities are filthy!
Chaos reigns - as it does in most Asian Cities. It’s hard to describe if you’ve never experienced it. They are wonderful parts of the world and I love visiting but my god they are overcrowded.

China say they have a one child per family policy so they are trying to do something about it in some way. As far as I know India doesn’t have any measures in place nor does African nations. Countries with large population growth should be doing something about birth control.

They AREN’T the people consuming the worlds resources… the issue with the world is NOT over population. The richest 20% of the world earns 86% of world’s income, consume 80% of the world’s resources, create 83% of the world’s waste. This means that a single birth in the in countries such as China, Africa and India is not equal to a bith in countries such as the USA, Britain, Australia and so on.
The math they use to determine these dangerous levels of population is based on consumption of resources per person alive, this means the figures are generally massively incorrect as not everyone is equal.
The real issue is the western world appetite to consume, not population growth.

Agreed as far as the concern regarding the western world consuming the earth’s resources at a concerning rate, what is also concerning is that China and India are developing to the point where they will demand more of these resources as well. The resources are finite so eventually there will be plenty of friction over what is available. In terms of population growth, the higher the number of mouths to feed the greater the demand for food and subsequent pressure on the earths food supplies. Third world countries that have trouble feeding their populations need to develop greater food producing capacity or cut population growth to stabilise or reduce demand for food.

yeah stryker, in no way mate was i saying the Indian people are dirty, i should have written “chaos, people, lack of general hygiene, rubbish collection and general cleaning” but that would have required me to say, “india summed up in 11 words” and that just doesn’t sound right?
The fact of the matter is ALL the above posts are correct. Yes the Western countries of the world are placing the highest stress on the planet……currently. But as China continues to grow its middle and upper class it will not be long before that statistic swings massively in Chinas favour. I actually think it could be starting to tilt that way now. Ill give an example. I remember about 20-25 years ago when i was a little tacker everything was “made in Taiwan” pretty soon Taiwan became too costly to outsource to as the general living standards there increased. Fast forward to the 90’s and the 00’s and for the last 20 years EVERYTHING has been “made in China”, now China is starting to outsource to other countries such as India and i am 100% sure in the near future youll see more and more products poping up with a “made in India” tag on it and less from China. With more then 1.5-2bill people there is a shortage of workers to work in many factories now here in China because the people are becoming more educated, informed and wise to the fact that better jobs do exist and will not work for a bowl of rice a day anymore. The cost of living in China has increased massively in the past 2 years alone and will have a run off effect into the manufacturing industry over the next few years.
There is no doubt China’s population is a major concern for the world in the next 50-100 years. Not so much now, but in those years to come as the Chinese people strive harder and harder to live the lifestyle of the material West. I only have to look around at the thousands upon thousands of motor vehicles i see everyday or the extraordinary amount of food packaging thrown all over the streets everyday only for it be cleaned over night just for it all to appear again the next day or the huge amount of power consumption from construction or existing apartments/shopping malls that is just so ongoing in the country it is mind blowing not for people to realise China is well and truely on the way to overtaking all of the West in terms of resource consumption and planet destruction in the next couple of decades.
Now, how do you resolve the problem? Birth control on a national level in the form of a “one child policy” sounds like a great idea, but this has numerous effects (too many to mention here, but i’ll touch on a few) 1) It should be every damn humans right to procreate!!
2) Health Issues of terminating a pregnancy at up to 8 months along
3) Social Issues - Aborting females as they are seen as ‘less’ value to the family unit thus creating an imbalance in the Male-Female ratio. Creating a Rapidly Increasing Aging Population
4) Psycological Problems - Little Emperor Syndrome
5) Internal rumblings amongst the populace - In china there is a thing called ‘guanxi’ In the west we say “greasing someones palm?” Guanxi is a way of life in China. If you have money, you then have friends, you then have favours… so this means if you are rich enough you can have as many children as you want. So the one child policy isnt as effective as it could be as poor people just go under ground and rich people just do it out in the open with their big pockets.
The biggest problem is that China’s pop. is so vast that even as they become more wealthier and naturally want to have less children to pursue education, careers and lifestyle it wont have a real affect for many many generations to come. Eventually if the world hasn’t withered away of course China’s population will decline…but then what do the gods and powers that be have to say about India by this time??I firmly believe we are living in the greatest era of mankinds duration. The world in 100-150 years time is somewhere i do not want to be.

I agree with you K. This is merely an educated guess, but I’m willing to be between the 2 billion odd people in India and China, that 80-85% of them are even able to afford to wastefully consume food or utilities. The only thing that China and India can be blamed for when it comes to lack of resources is their ability to make it ridiculously cheap to facilitate our wanton materialistic nature!
