I just read the same rumour, and it’s not from what I would consider a dodgy source - more to follow….

NORTH Queensland has signed troubled halfback Robert Lui on a two-year deal after he was granted a release from the Wests Tigers.

Lui, who is currently facing assault charges for which he has pleaded not guilty, has been released from the final year of his deal with the Tigers and will commence training with the Cowboys next Monday.

For the second time in as many years the 21-year-old was accused of assaulting his girlfriend days after his team was eliminated from the NRL finals.

Lui was stood down by his club after the alleged attack which sparked suggestions he would be released to join the Townsville-based side.

Lui, the Cowboys and Wests Tigers have been in discussion for some time and all agree that a move to his home environment will be beneficial to his development.

Cowboys football manager Peter Parr says Lui will bring depth to North Queensland’s halves in 2012.

ā€œRobert has been a key member in the Wests Tigers finals teams over the past couple of years and his talent and potential has been recognised across the game,ā€ Parr said.

ā€œHe’s a North Queensland boy and is looking forward to being part of our roster and to representing his region.

ā€œAt his young age, Robert has virtually his whole career ahead of him and we’ll be welcoming him into a solid playing group that will provide leadership and support.ā€

Wests Tigers can confirm half-back Robert Lui has been released from the final year of his contract with the Club.

The decision allows Lui to immediately take on a two-year deal with the North Queensland Cowboys.

Born in Townsville, Lui made his first grade debut for the Club at the end of 2009 and played 43 games for Wests Tigers.

ā€œRobert grew up in North Queensland and we believe he will benefit from the strong family support available to him in Townsville," said Wests Tigers Chief Executive Stephen Humphreys.

ā€œHe is a very talented football player and leaves with our best wishes for the future.ā€

I remember the first time I saw Lui play in the NYC. He was at 6 and were playing Penrith IIRC.
In that game Lui took control from the kickoff, putting up pin-point bomb after pin-point bomb, pretty well toying the the Panthers backline as the Tigers shot away to a huge lead.

I remember thinking how good this kid would be in the future, how exciting it was to have such a good talent coming through. To be honest I thought he made grade a little too early, but he has no doubt found a place in the NRL. I also think he’s a 6, not a 7. Hopefully he’ll get to show his stuff outside a good half.

                      Good luck Rob

In terms of his football, i’m a little torn. Brilliant with the ball in his hands but cannot tackle.

In terms of his off field behaviour…… good decision.

I’m gutted to lose his talent, but happy to lose the attitude that goes with him.More tries against the cowboys when Ellis and Blair flatten him

Real shame that he went off the rails.

He will carve us up when we play the Cowboys.

It’s good to see all parties have agreed to it but i feel the people who are loosing out here are the WT fans.

                              He does wrong
We loose a potentially good halfback
He is allowed to sign with the
                              Cowgirls.

Lui gets a new life and start
                              Cowgirls get a good signing
                              WT are halfback short.

                              Just doesn’t seem right.

If the allegations are to be proven, he shouldnt be allowed to play for the remaining of his contract.

I might be a little harsh. I Just think WT are getting the raw deal

I would have loved a swap deal with a Cowboys player to be in effect but it is what it is I guess and I don’t know that the club could handle taking too many more hits in the media

Well there is still the matter of his pending court case. If it goes the wrong way he might not be playing at all. I think its a strong move by the Tigers to say that we don’t want that type of person (regardless of playing ability) at our club.
