Will very much miss his voice on the ABC commentary of the cricket this summer.

Tragic really. It appears he took his own life.

In the early 90’s there were very unsavory accusations made about him, and the police spoke to him earlier in the day, I wonder whether similar accusations, or new evidence in relation to these are linked to his death.
Im fairly sure he even pleaded guilty to a charge at some point. -
Sad news, he was a real journo, called it how it was and didn’t try and cosy up to players. Rather than list problems, he would offer solutions. He was also a very good writer in general and his pieces were always good to read even if you disagree with his opinion. A big loss for the cricketing world, even if you don’t agree with his points of view.

Im fairly sure he even pleaded guilty to a charge at some point.I think you’re referring to when he was coaching three young blokes (back in 98 or 99 I think,) where he’d cane them for failure to comply with rules he’d set for them. He did plead guilty and he was given a suspended jail sentence.
Apparently he was rather disturbed the night before and as you have already stated the police had spoken to him.

Such a sad day for cricket. I loved reading his articles and had just read his last article about the Aussie debacle last night. It was a huge shock this morning but in saying that, the cause of his death isn’t such a huge shock as by most reports I have read that he could be a complicated man.
I didnt listen to him on ABC but based on his articles, whilst they were opinionated, the reasons for those opinions were explained and they were very engaging. You could tell that his love for the game meant a lot to him.
I find it a bit eery that his last article in SMH finished with ‘Mind you a lot can happen in one week. It just did.’
RIP.

Something a lot of people forget is he was a fine cricketer and if it hadn’t been for the fact he was an opener and he was up against Boycott ,Brearley Edrich etc he would of played a lot more Test Cricket
Also a legendary Somerset cricketer he was their in the halycon days when they Botham ,Garner and Richards were at the county
Have heard that his double century made on a juicy pitch against Richard Hadlee was one the finest county innings ever seen
Fine journalist I rate him as highly as Richie Benaud or Tony Cozier
RIP Peter Roebuck -
Story on 9msn alledging he jumped while being questioned by police over a sexual assault

Yeah, read the same thing in the Terrorgraph this morning.

To be honest I was never a fan….his harsh criticism of that champion Australian side always smacked of tall poppey syndrome and jealousy for mine.
However if the reports coming out of SA are accurate I really feel for his family.

Are you referring to the 2008 Indian Test Stryker?

Roebuck always struck me as a man who struggled with trying to balance his private and public lives. I am extremely reluctant to speculate any further or offer a pat diagnosis on someone I’ve never met but I’m very fearful that his inability to deal with his private issues has led to this tragic outcome.
I also disagreed with quite a few of his columns (particularly his frequent batterings of Ricky Ponting) but I always enjoyed reading them as he was one of the few writers who displayed a deeper insight into what was going on rather than reporting on events at a surface level. I was also impressed at the way he placed the game in a wider complex when discussing sports gambling (and the reasons why it was so prevalent) and the problems in dealing with sporting bodies dominated by cronies of people like Mugabe.
There really is no replacement for his brand of writing at this time. His passing leaves an enormous gap.

Sad News. I enjoyed his Cricket commentary on the radio during these extremely long breaks between NRL seasons.

THIS - x2.
All personal demons aside, he was a knowledgeable chap that didn’t allow all the verbal fellatio the Aussie commentators gave the rampaging Australian team of the late 90’s/early 2000’s to taint his views, and he always offered fairly constructive criticism, IMO without sounding like he was whinging.

that was the lesser charge I was referring to, there were far more serious accusations made earlier to that.
At times I liked him as a commentator/journo, he annoyed the hell out of me when the Aussies were dominating and he kept belittling there achievements, on the flip side he wrote some excellent pieces over the years.
