PLAYERS UNDERTAKE TOUGH CYCLING SESSION
Story/photos by Wayne Cousins
2/12/2011 10:58:55 AMThe conditions were perfect for cycling but for the players, it was sheer torture at Centennial Park this morning.
Starting at 8am, each player in the NRL squad was ordered to do 12 laps around one of Sydney’s most historical and beautiful parks. Each lap was just under 4km.
Wests Tigers High Performance Manager John Skandalis and Assistant Coach Steve Georgallis joined the players for the laps. Some groups even rode alongside NRL referees such as Tony Archer and Shayne Hayne who were also working on their fitness for next season.
There were a few broken chains and a flat tyre along the way but each player came through the session okay.
The best performed group comprised of Tim Moltzen, Liam Fulton, Junior Moors, Sean Meaney and Mitch Brown, finishing the repetitive lap session in just on 90 minutes.

I know these guys do heaps of cross training and probably little cycling but having been involved in athletics and sprinting the coaches I had literally swore us off bikes as they cause your hammies to shorten which shortens your stride .
Things obviously have changed in the last 25 years
-
Moors! Cool. I thought he’d gone. Hope he gets a shot next year.
-
Nice, sweet talking the refs on the bike ride, getting Gallop on side at the charity cricket.

90 minutes for 12 laps that’s pretty good - 4 x 12= 48 k’s

Yeh! I am a lot older than you (I think!) and bike riding was a no-no, because you worked some muscles the wrong way I thought.
It looks like things have changed in the last 50 years. -

It looks like things have changed in the last 50 years.Surely hamstrings are the same as they have ever been?
Maybe we just know a little more about them

Yeah thats the point we were making Helmesy
If they had the science we have know how much different the game would be
Gee even 25 years ago how many NRL players smoked (even having a quick bunger at half time) or even a can of the nectar from the gods while watching the reggies play
-
I remember Scott Prince saying he was basically on the bike constantly during his horror run of leg injuries while at the Broncos. I know it was a few years ago, but the broncos are known for being pretty much on the edge of the latest training and tech.

Some of them still smoke. Brett Finch is a shocker on the bungers apparently.
-
Yeah I think you’d hard pushed to find 5 players that are smokers
Twenty years ago you could name 2 from each club
-
I remember seeing Jason Moodie puffing away about an hour before game time behind the Latchem Robinson stand at Leichhardt Oval in about 2004.
I reckon today the percentage of NRL players that smoke would have to be less than 1% surely?
-
Good to see Mitch Brown doing well……kudos

Dont bet on it! I have seen many players out on the sauce and a lot light up.
I like the idea of having Archer and Hayne along. Anything to keep those two from hammering us on field.
90 minutes for 48k’s is a very respectable effort. I would have been bored after lap 4.
